My Choice for TimeOutKL Food Award 2011

AA - Al Amnah Restaurant

For the first time, TimeOutKL has included a Blogger's Choice category in The Time Out KL Food Awards 2011. So here I am nominating KL's best teh tarik place Al Amnah Restaurant. As I've mentioned before, they're located on the ground floor of Kuala Lumpur's earliest apartment building - Selangor Mansion in Masjid India vicinity. There's a row of similar eateries here but this is our favourite as the teh tarik is so far the best we have tasted and the rotis (flat breads) are the bomb!

The teh tarik (pulled tea) is totally not sweet at all, without you even telling them "kurang manis (less sweet)". The tea flavour is strong but yet creamy. I would love to learn how to make this version of teh tarik!

KL's best Teh Tarik (RM1)

I'm not a big fan of roti canais (flaky flat bread) but when I do want one, this is the place for me. Since the turn around of customers here is very high, they tend to make pile high of plain roti canais here that are round in shaped. However, we usually tell them we want Roti Canai Empat Segi (square) as these are usually freshly made and the crispy version of roti canai. They are served with a thickish dhal (lentil curry) with a dollop of sweet sambal. There are other curries too, just tell them which you prefer.

AA - dhall with sambal

Capt'n Hook's usual order of Roti Canai Telur Bawang (eggs and onions) has also became a hit with BoiBoi. When we first brought him here, he was a bit skeptical with the surroundings... sighhh the signs of well fed kids brought up in comfy restaurants hahahaha but then again he like the teh tarik and rotis so much, plus the countless stray cats that he admired... he's not complaining any more.

AA - roti telur bawang

When we first started coming here, the rotis staples are very basic but the recent years they have succumbed and added in a few more schmancy fancy (in their standard lah) items like Roti Sardine. Canned sardines in tomato sauce are smashed before beating in an egg and adding a few slices of onions which in turned poured on the thin stretched dough before being cooked.

AA - roti sardine

My utmost favourite has to be the Roti Special! It's basically roti banjir (sliced up roti canai drowned in dhal) topped with 2 soft boiled eggs with a dollop of sambal on the side. I'm not sure about you but for a big fan of wobbly eggs with perfectly runny yolk soaking through the mash of roti and dhal... this is my kinda hearty dig.

Roti Special (RM2.30)

Al Amnah is always buzzing with activities and it's always interesting to watch the going ons here at any time of the day. As this is a small Indian Muslim establishment, they do not take credit cards. It's a road side eatery in an old building, so do not expect this to be disabled friendly nor children friendly. As for pet, I guess you can bring in your pet cat or iguana, I'm sure they won't mind.

Review: Chicken Duck Rice @ Semua House Food Court

**Non-Halal**

The place where I work now is freaking too far to walk to our fave lunch hang out places. Since we're back in the HQ where all the hawk eyes are watching, it's hard to have leisurely lunch. So most times I bring my own food, otherwise will just pack my lunch nearby. Having pork dishes are also out of the question unless and until I go over to Masjid India area to run some errands.

Yes, you heard me!!! There is pork in Masjid India area and it can be found inside Semua House Food Court. One part of the food court have non-halal stalls which I only discovered quite recently :p heh. Most times I only managed to stop at the little bakery but once I walked down a few steps and stumbled upon rows of glistening char sius (BBQ pork), siu yuk (roast pork) and of course plump just roasted chicken. Err so far I haven't seen any duck despite the name etched above the stall.

I've packed the rice back a few times since I hardly have much time to sit down and eat. I was even messengered to pack some back to my colleagues when they saw the delicious meats laid on top of the fragrant rice. Once I had Chicken and Char Siu Rice (RM4.80), I loved the tender chicken breast and oooo the char siu was sticky but not sickly sweet. Most importantly their chilli sauce has the right amount tang with the usual garlic, ginger and chilli.

Chicken, Siu Yuk & Char Siu Rice RM7.50

The latest, I was greedy after hearing a girl asking for all 3 combi the previous round... yes yes I have to get the Chicken, Siu Yuk and Char Siu Rice (RM7.50)!!! Hahahaha... the siew yuk doesn't look great on the rack, looked kinda dry but surprisingly the skin is crunchy and the meat was tasty enough. It was worth all the RM7.50 but I should have asked for half rice, I know I could have just stop short of eating the rice but the rice was so good with the meats. I was too stuffed :p in the end. Ahhhh the peril of being greedy!

Aiks, My First Roti Canai of The Year

Hahaha could you believe it? Half a year have gone in 2009 and I just had my first full one piece roti canai. Other times snipping off other people's plate not counted!!!

On Monday, Capt'n Hook ajak me to eat roti canai for dinner and I said yes. He was shocked cos I don't usually eat roti canai plus I was still recovering from my cough. He asked me a few times "Are you sure?" hahaha adoi.

Anyway we went to our usual haunt Al Amnah at Selangor Mansion, Masjid India. Capt'n Hook ordered his usual Roti Telur Bawang. For myself, I wanted something different from the usual stuff hahaha yes but how different can the roti turn out right, Capt'n Hook always said that I'm always the one that menyusahkan saje!

I saw "Roti Canai Special RM2.30" on the board and proceeded to ask them what it is. The server replied "Roti canai banjir tambah 2 telur setengah masak atas". Wowwww... yummsss I think I already liked the special a lot and ordered one. I can't resist having my roti shredded up with dhal poured all over and a dollop of sweet sambal on the side PLUS topped with 2 half boiled eggs!!! I know this is not something new but I've never eaten it before as I usually prefer having thosai or chapati.

Roti Special (RM2.30)

Are you salivating now?

Hehehe darn delish, I tell ya! My only mistake was not ordering the roti to be freshly done. Mine was from one of the many plain rotis stacked up to almost 6" high pile where the steam have made the roti turned a bit soggy.

Dinner was great, even greater washing down with a glass of KL's best teh tarik!

Psssttt... here, here... KL's Best Teh Tarik

AA - Al Amnah Restaurant

Can you guess where is this place located?

Hahaha I guess it's hard eh unless you're a true KLite.

My hubby brought me here during our courting days for supper. He used to frequent this quaint little stall during his graveyard shifts when he was working for the bank. Let me introduce to you - Al Amnah Restaurant. It's not a restaurant proper, just a small stall located along the walkway on the Ground Floor of Selangor Mansion. This stall faces the river and a stone throw away from the pedestrian bridge across the river to Jalan Ampang. The hustle and bustle at this place usually heightens in the wee hours of the morning.

I can vouch that their teh tarik (pulled milked tea) is one of the best in Kuala Lumpur. Why you may ask... for me this is the only stall I find that do not serve sickly sweet teh tarik with the right balance of tea flavour and the creaminess of the condensed milk. Best part is, you don't even need to add "kurang kurang manis" (less less sweet literally) at the back of your order!!! Sorry no picture... just looked like normal teh tarik but tastewise, it's a bomb and I'm not kidding as hubby bumped into his ex-classmate who resides in Kajang drinking teh tarik here hehehe...

The rotis made here are crispy and fluffy. Previously they only have basic rotis but now it seems the menu have expanded to include some of the fancy mancy rotis but don't expect a long list of them.

Hubby ordered roti sardine (RM3.00) which is basically roti canai with a filling of mashed tinned sardine mixed with an egg and sliced onions. I had one bite and mmmmmm mmmmm mmmm...

AA - roti sardine

My roti telur bawang (RM1.70) is just basically roti canai with an egg cracked over it with sprinkling of sliced onions. I loved this piping hot!

AA - roti telur bawang

Both rotis were served with thickish dhall (not the usual watered down version) that I prefered with a dollop of sambal which I find it a tad too sweet. However, it does serve its purpose.

AA - dhall with sambal

Total bill of the two rotis with one glass of teh tarik and one glass of limau panas (hot calamansi) came up to RM6.60.

Game to sit by the five foot way beside the parit (drain)? Then wait no more!!! Head on to Al Amnah and get yourself a glass of teh tarik.

Review: A Little Bakery at Semua House Food Court

Over the years when I run errands over at Masjid India area, I've discovered the yummilicious Rosli Mee Rebus and then later this little bakery that has no name located at a corner inside Semua House's food court at the basement. I just stumbled upon it one day when I went to the food court to look for food. Now most times, I will go to this bakery to grab some buns/pastries, well if I'm lucky!!! Apparently there is a timing as to what goodies roll out of the oven each day. Buns are usually available quite late like 1.30pm. Since it's usually crowded, I didn't manage to ask about it. Otherwise, egg tarts, cheese tarts, coconut tarts, butter cakes, danish style pastries would be available.

As the lot is pretty small, so far I've not seen the full range of goods they sell. Moreover, their pastries and buns sell like hot cakes!!! No chance for them to be on the trays too long...

So far, I've tried their coconut tart which is good. Egg tart (RM1.00) so-so only cos I didn't like the pastry casing, still prefer Tong Kee's.

SH - egg tart RM1.00

This round I gotten the Oyster Sauce Chicken bun (RM1.40) which is fantastic! A bit kempis (flat) from my rough handling haha cos when I bought it that time it was round and fluffy.

SH - oyster sauce chicken bun RM1.40

Then I have the Sausage Cheese Mayo bun (RM1.40) which is quite nice, it's soft and moist. So far this is the only time I was lucky enough to see any buns hahaha... The rest no comment yet but loads of regulars asking for this and that which are still baking in the oven.

SH - sausage cheese mayo bun RM1.40

I was told there is a branch at the food court of Menara City One (next to Semua House) serving the same goodies. Sorry I do not have much details about this bakery nor have it's contact number. Will get it the next trip I'm there.

Rosli Mi Rebus - Revisited

I kept going to Rosli Mi Rebus for lunch when I'm in the vicinity but I never had the opportunity to take photos of the delish Mee Rebus or Tauhu Goreng until recently. I've wrote about the details HERE.

These are the yummy stuff served at Pakcik Rosli's warung...

rosli mi rebus

rosli tauhu goreng

One can opt to have the mee rebus and tauhu goreng separately or campur (mixed). I personally preferred the mixed version as the mee rebus kuah (gravy) and kuah kacang (peanut gravy) really married well. The peanut gravy gave a thicker rendition and extra punch to the gravy. Maybe my next trip I can take a picture of the mee rebus campur tauhu.

Rosli Mi Rebus

My colleague introduced me to this stall at Masjid India area a few months back. Located behind Wisma Shen, there is this row of roadside hawker stalls, look for Rosli Mi Rebus signage.

A pair of elderly couple man the stall. Pakcik (a common Malay word with reference as Uncle) does all the cooking, whilst his wife will add on the condiments and sauce. They sell a really yummy Mi Rebus (roughly translated as blanched noodle in Malay. Mi is commonly spelt as Mee in Malaysia.). There is nothing special in the ingredients as they merely consisted of blanched yellow noodle (similar to chow mien noodle depicted here), mung bean sprouts, cucumber strips, half a boiled egg and limau kasturi (a type of lime). Topped with sliced red and green chilies, Chinese celery and bawang goreng (Malay for deep fried shallots). The kick of this dish lies on the sauce. Makcik (Pakcik's wife whom I shall refer as Makcik for the equivalent of an aunt) will ladle on the yellowish sauce over this. I'm not sure what's inside but mostly local spices, mash potatoes as thickener and so forth. I really love the sauce as I drank

Sorry, I didn't managed to take a photo as my mobile phone got stolen a few weeks back. Reid has taken one on her trip to Singapore recently. They do not look the same but similar though. For RM2.70, it is really a cheap lunch by KL standard.

Besides Mi Rebus, Pakcik dish up a devilish peanut sauce to serve with another specialty - tauhu goreng (deep fried beancurd). Pakcik uses the soft beancurd and when a customer order one, he will just dunk one whole beancurd into a big wok of hot oil. Once it is light golden brown, Pakcik will dish out and Makcik will cut the beancurd up and place it on top of some cucumber and blanched mung bean sprouts. She will then ladle on the potent peanut sauce! I can handle hot and spicy stuff very well but this sauce really pack the punch... HOT!

I packed this back for dinner and here is how tauhu goreng looked like. By the way, it's RM1.20 for a piece. That's 2 pieces there in the photo.

Pakcik can cater to office and private functions. Call him a day in advance. Errr do speak to them in Malay ok hehehe.
