Review: Surisit The Thai Kopitiam

**Non-Halal**

Last week I took you to Japan and this week, let's go Thailand!

Surisit The Thai Kopitiam is still a new kid on the block but already receiving raves reviews all over. It is located in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), same row as Penang Village. The set up is a simple kopitiam but thank goodness it's air-conditioned. Makes it comfortable to enjoy hot and spicy food!

Thai Condiments

For drinks, you'll see some imported bottled drinks from Thailand like Capt'n Hook's Thai Tamarind Juice (RM7.90) which seriously quench your thirst. I just had the usual Thai Black Jelly (RM3.90).

Thai Black Jelly (RM3.90) & Thai Tamarind Juice (RM7.90)

Since there were just 2 of us, we just opted for fried rice. Capt'n Hook's Kao Phat Kung (Prawn Fried Rice RM14.90) came first. Tasted like ordinary fried rice but quite flavourful.

"Kao Phat Kung" - Prawn Fried Rice (RM14.90)

Since I've read raves review on Kao Klut Gapi (Belacan Fried Rice RM14.90), so I must have this. After browsing through numerous blogs, not sure why the pork belly served to me was placed directly on the rice and not on a separate bowl. Anyway, I guess it won't' make much difference. I wished they have used a bigger plate for this to ease mixing up the belacan fried rice with the condiments ie. long beans, raw mango, shallots, omelette, chili padi and pork belly. I find the rice do not have enough "wok hei" (breath of the wok) and had tasted better ones else where.

"Kao Klut Gapi" – Belacan Fried Rice (RM14.90)

The compulsory green for us was Kana Moo Krab (Stir Fried Kailan with Crispy Pork RM14.90). Just plain old stir-fried kai lan with garlic and addition of ermmm something like roast pork minus the crispiness. I think I would like salted fish in here instead.

"Kana Moo Krab" - Stir Fried Kailan with Crispy Pork (RM14.90)

Capt'n Hook's Torb Tim Krob (RM5.90) which was alright and come with generous red rubies (water chestnut) and jackfruit slices with the only grouse that the ice was not made of shaved ice. They have used crushed ice. This was feedback to them and was informed they were looking for an ice shaver at the moment. So give them a bit of time to acquire one.

Torb Tim Krob (RM5.90)

There seems to be a little confusion on the opening hours as stated up front. Looks like it was adjusted to 11.00am instead of 9.00am.

Surisit

I guess it's only fair to give this place another few tries to check out the dishes that goes with rice plus a while more to get things into a smooth moving gear. My only problem is the amount of MSG used, I was so thirsty that I had gulped down 500ml water just before going to bed at 2am and woke up at 5am for another glass of water, a first for me definitely o.O

Review: A Wet Thai Cafe

**Non-Halal**

A friend of mine had introduced A Wet Thai Cafe which is located in Taman Cheras within walking distance from the wai sek kai (street food). We have been there numerous time and so far they have not disappoint us in terms of service and quality. This post is a collection of a couple of our trips there.

Upon arrival, you'll be served with a cold water in metal cup with a light hint of pandan. Do note that this is RM1 per person and it's refillable. Decline this if you wish to have something else, otherwise it will be charged to your bill.

We tried Meang Kam (RM12) which has an array of condiments like lime, chillies, peanuts, toasted coconut flakes, galangal, onions and dried shrimps. The daun kaduk (wild betel leaves in English) is given separately and you'll need to fold one leave into a cup before ladling in tiny bits of everything before topping off with the sauce. Fold down the leave and pop into your mouth. Love the burst of flavours in the mouth. The sauce here is kinda hot. Not the best we have eaten though.

Meang Kam (RM12)

Meang Kam

This is the Thai Combo Set (RM30) that has 4 pieces each of prawn cakes (looks like doughnut), fish cakes and pandan leaves wrapped chicken. There's a bowl of mango salad in the centre. While this salad is forgettable but the fish cakes and prawns cakes are lovely. Ingredients were fresh definitely. The pandan leaves wrapped chicken however depends on how they were being deep fried. There was once it was over fried, hence a little dry but otherwise this is all right too.

Thai Combo Set (RM30)

Thai Combo Set 2

Then we have the Thai Deep Fried Pork Ribs with Garlic (RM15). This was over fried making it dry and tough, otherwise the flavour was all right.

Thai Deep Fried Pork Ribs with Garlic (RM15)

There are limited beancurd dishes and this is one of them Minced Pork Tofu (RM12) which you can skip. The gravy is way starchy and when it got cold, it's kinda gluey.

Minced Pork Tofu (RM12)

We quite like their Thai Fried Kangkung (RM10) which is typical Thai style of sambal with the addition of preserved beans (tau cheong in Cantonese). Enough wok hei here for the veggies.

Thai Fried Kangkung (RM10)

We were recommended this Salted Chicken (RM28) once and this was a free range chicken where the meat is slightly on the tough side but gave a nice flavour. Not overly salty and it's done well.

Salted Chicken (RM28)

Ahhh then our favourite cos it has salted fish amongst the crunchy kai lan in the Thai Fried Kailan (RM10).

Thai Fried Kailan (RM10)

Omelette  is not in the menu but you can order it as they will usually do when you have children at your table who can't take spicy food. This one is Thai Fried Egg (RM10) which has minced meat inside. Loved the crunchy bits on the side but a bit oily though. This is BoiBoi's fave and a must order for him.

Thai Fried Egg (RM10)

Now, A Wet is famous for their Thai BBQ too hence you can see lots of smoke bellowing out at the back portion of the corner. To simplify matters, we usually take the Thai BBQ Combo (RM40) as it has a combination of prawns, lamb, chicken and squid. It came with the forgettable mango salad and a delish greenish and tangy chilli sauce. Each of the meat were delicious on their own way and was glad we have gotten a combo. Best part was they have perfected the art of grilling squid as the squid remained tender, otherwise it would turned into rubber sheets!

Thai BBQ Combo (RM40)

There were some dessert choices and Tab Tim Krob (RM5.90). Other than the water chestnuts that came in 2 colours - red and yellow, you can see that the portion of jelly cubes and jackfruit (nangka in Malay) are quite substantial.

Tab Tim Krob (RM5.90)

The menu have only one size in portion so if you have a large group like 10, you might need to order 2 portions as I reckon each portion can feed like 4-5 people only. I've misplaced the receipts but if not mistaken there's Government tax (5%) and a service charge.

If you're going there on a weekend, either be there early like 6.00pm or my best advice is to call to make a reservation. Do that even on weekdays! By 7.00pm, it would be packed! Parking would be easier too when early as they have some "reserved" space in front of the restaurant.

Note: We are away for the week on holiday but several scheduled posts will be up. Hence, comments will only be approved when we're back. Ta.

Review: pla dib @ The Heritage Village

**Pork Free**

When I first read of pla dib in the papers the previous weekend, the thought of Thai fusion kinda disinterest me as Capt'n Hook is rather a errrm traditional person who doesn't like his food to be messed up. When I received an invite from Nigel via Anna Chew of Venus Buzz for food tasting at pla dib, I was in dilemma. To go or not to go??? Not to go when a place that is finally so near home is kinda hard to resist, so in the end I accepted the invite. On that day, Capt'n Hook picked me and I left on the dot at 5.30pm from the heart of Kuala Lumpur... braving the jam which is surprisingly quite smooth except the turn off from Seremban Highway towards the Selangor Turf Club/Palace of the Golden Horse. Guess what... we reached The Heritage Village around 6.15pm!!! Ample time for us to scoot over to The Mines Shopping to pick up a card reader from the IT center which is like huge (my first time here), yeah lots of stuff here, don't need to go to Low Yat Plaza!

pla dip

The rest who came later complained it took them like an hour from various destination like Shah Alam, Bangsar etc well that's also because the sky decided to take a heavy dump. So in actual fact, only the mind is telling us that Serdang is very far! On weekends, if you decided to do a Cuti-cuti Malaysia with your family, you can actually take a KTM Komuter ride to Serdang station via Seremban route. Cross the pedestrian bridge and walk towards the white blocks of buildings with Chinese influence roofs and you'll be at The Heritage Village. Take a short walk through the tunnel and you'll reach The Mines Shopping. If you have kids, take them on the boat ride. We took one last year and it was surprisingly quite fun to ride such a huge water elevator!

Opps, back to pla dib... just drive into the compound and the security guard will issue you a parking chit, bring the chit to your dining destinations in The Heritage Village to be stamped and parking will be free, otherwise it'll be RM3 per entry. pla dib is located at the far corner of the building towards the lake which seems to be a great destination for an outdoor party or function. Reminded me very much of our wedding reception next to the lake at Palace of the Golden Horses, minus the water fountain.

I finally met up with Anna after being in touch over the years. She introduced us to our hostess, Sherlene, of BluWater Estate. Sherlene explained to us that everything in pla dib are fashioned and designed after the Bangkok restaurant. The bulk of the furnitures and furnishing are imported from Thailand! The stools we sat at the outdoor area are extremely heavy and sturdy. Quite comfy actually.

Pla Dib 01

Whilst waiting for the rest to arrive, we were offered imported Phuket beer which is surprisingly quite light for a 5% alcohol beer. It's served with a lemon wedge but Anna claimed it's nice without it as well. Kinda unique too to drink from such a slim glass.

Phuket Beer

As explained to us pla dib means raw fish but putting them together it also means freedom of food which explains the fusion cuisine here. I checked through the menu, there seems to be quite a number of raw seafood dishes here as appetizers. The menu rage confusion as one can find Japanese kinda appetizers, pasta, pizza... I see French influence in a duck confit! Prices were very decent with the ingredients and portion served with nothing above RM30 except for the large pizza. Please note that pla dib has separate lunch and dinner menu where dinner menu has more items available and that's with where the raw items are.

Once everyone - PureGlutton and hubby, Nigel and Allan and FBB arrived we were ushered inside. Aly joined us later. The air-conditioned interior exude a very clean and modern environment. The chairs were again very chic and heavy to boot!

Pla Dib Interior

They started us off with some appetizers. This is Salmon Labb (RM10) which is slices of salmon drizzled with shoyu, chili flakes, roasted rice and lime juice. The zing on the first bite is kinda strong but I really loved the roasted rice on them.

Salmon Labb (RM10)

Next came the Raw Shrimp in Fish Sauce (RM15). I've eaten this before in a Thai restaurant but never with such an interesting marinade. The explosion of chili, lime zest and juice is simply amazing coupled with extra fresh and crunchy shrimp. Whilst Capt'n Hook squirms when he sees this but I loved this appetizer the most. However, he being a great sport, he took one but that went shivered down his spine!

Raw Shrimp in Fish Sauce (RM15)

Mixed Four Raw Seafood (something new) came in a long platter with mounds of raw chopped shrimps, tuna, octopus and salmon topped with a mysterious sauce that tasted like fermented soybeans (tau cheo) was served. Perhaps this is made from miso?

Mixed Four Raw Seafood

Everyone who was drinking beer seems to like this Single Sun Beef (RM15). Slices of beef are marinaded with salt and pepper before they're sunned until dry. The beef slices are then deep fried with garlic, chili flakes and Thai basil. Fantastic finger food this one.

Single Sun Beef (RM15)

One can't go really wrong with deep fried soft shell crabs. What more when it's served with healthy greens in mayobi (mayonnaise and wasabi) dressing (RM15)!

Soft Shell Crab Salad (RM15)

We were served a series of 3 pastas. This is Creamy Capellini Angel Hair Pasta with Ebiko (RM18). A tad too creamy but loved the burst of ebiko upon each bite!!!

Creamy Capellini Angel Hair Pasta (RM18)

Black Spaghetti with Seafood (RM18) is my favourite pasta for the night. The spaghetti is blacken with squid ink tossed lightly in olive oil and topped with squid, prawns and fish slices.

Black Spaghetti with Seafood (RM18)

After a black pasta, we were served a green spinach fettucini with mentaiko. Mentaiko being cod's egg are served along with a dollop of cream under the nest of toasted seaweeds strips. This is my least favourite pasta for the evening as the above 2 worked more for me. However, Capt'n Hook liked this one... funny eh when it comes to food... everyone just have their own personal preference and more on this later.

Spinach Fettucini with Mentaiko

We were then served the 2 special drinks (RM9.50 each) available here. A green coloured Mint Soursop Blast which is made from soursop puree, mint leaves, pineapple juice, fresh lime and syrup. Everyone seems to love this sweet minty drinks. I preferred this over Pladib Art. Pladib Art is concocted with peach, pineapple juice, grenadine, yoghurt, fresh lime and syrup. To Capt'n Hook and Nigel, this tasted like cough syrup but when it comes to food and drink... one man's meat is another man's poison as FBB liked this more than the green drink. Puzzling isn't it?

Mint Soursop Blast and Pladib Art (RM9.50 each)

We were showered with 3 main dishes. First up was Grilled Lemongrass Chicken with Roasted Rice (RM20). Loved how the lemongrass marinade worked extremely well with chicken. The creative part here is the rice which is mixed with eggs, shaped and roasted. The rice cake is soft on the inside with a layer of crisp on the outside. The rice has springy texture which we thought is made from Japanese rice but we were all wrong. They were Thai fragrant rice!

Grilled Lemongrass Chicken with Roasted Rice (RM20)

This interesting plate of rice came and we went wahhhh all cos of the egg placed on top of the rice. This is Black Fried Rice (RM20), rice blackened with squid ink and fried with pieces of seafood and chillies bits served with a ring of deep fried basil leaves. One has to mix in the raw egg into the hot rice before eating. Gosh the raw egg really worked the rice into a slight creamy texture and this by far one of the best item we have eaten at pla dib. Eggcellent!!!

Black Fried Rice (RM20)

At this juncture, a side dish of Mashed potatoes and Wasabi (RM8) were served. FBB and Aly were eggcited cos they both loved mash potatoes. All round murmurs of "hmmm I love this mash" can be heard. If you're worried that wasabi might give you a heart attack, don't worry here. The mash has just a light hint of wasabi.

Mashed potatoes and Wasabi (RM8)

Opps the fish here looked bellied up hehe but what the heck! Rainbow Trout in Lime Leaf and Steam Rice (RM28) has fresh trout that came from New Zealand which has a natural sweet flavour. The fish is stuffed with ginger and lime leaves, topped with cherry tomatoes and assorted mushrooms and wrapped in parchment paper and baked. Funny, my serving has lots of ginger and lime leaves strips where else the rest just have fish. I chewed on the leaves and find it's a very fragrant kaffir lime leaves (daun limau purut in Malay).

Rainbow Trout in Lime Leaf and Steam Rice (RM28)

By now, I'm really stuffed but just can't resist the Smoked Salmon Pizza (regular RM30, large RM36). We really wondered how on earth they manage to roll the dough so thin!!! The outcome was splendid as the crust is crispy. We smeared the egg all over the smoked salmon slices before digging in. The tomato based sauce, rosemary and mozzarella cheese gave the extra flavourings here. A rare combo but they do really melded well.

Smoked Salmon Pizza (regular RM30, large RM36)

By now everyone is yearning for the dessert but when I see Thab Thim Krob... I scrunched up my face. Everyone except me were waiting for the jackfruit in the Thab Thim Krob (RM8) until the dish was brought out and introduced. Eeeekkk no smell and I was really really very happy when told pla dib version does not have jackfruit :p It was victory indeed but you should have seen the other scowling faces.

Pla dib's version is very special indeed. The finely shaved ice came from a block of frozen coconut milk so you won't get a watered down version as the ice melts. The crunchy chestnut chunks here are on the larger side and has strips of young coconut on top of the ice. Very refreshing and good till the last drop, yes last drop cause I did a very unladylike thingy here... I excused myself to the rest and had a "maggi mee" moment :p I tipped the bowl to my mouth and emptied the bowl!!!

Thab Tim Krob (RM8)

We were served a very rich and moist Marbled Spice Cake, brought by Nigel. He mentioned it's a test cake but we're not complaining. We begged him not to tell us how much butter and egg yolks were used but he let on that each of us would have one egg yolk in our piece of cake *fainted*. This loaf cake will be made available by middle of July at Just Heavenly and their outlets.

Just Heavenly's Marbled Spice Cake

The next item Homemade Durian Gelato is silky smooth! Now, durian... I like and it's not smelly heh. FBB and Nigel find this so weird of me hahaha. The durian used was generous in portion but this is not in the menu, so just asked for it as they do not make it in a large batch to keep freshness at bay.

Homemade Durian Gelato

To sum up the entire evening... the company no need to mention as always is great. The food seriously if pla dib is consistent with the quality, then we'll be happy campers since coming here will be a breeze for us and it has food that BoiBoi will like. I now take back my initial reservation about Thai fusion as the confusion here really rocks!

There's another thing I would like to mention here... Sherlene, the Chef (we didn't get his name but he's local and trained in pla dib Bangkok, Prakash and staff did a fantastic job. I've never attended a review that worked like clockwork where everything run in perfect precise movements. If you're a PR agent or restaurateur reading this, do take note.

This was how the review was done... Prakash brings out the actual dish for us to take photos, then he proceed to explain what's the dish and opportunity is given to us to ask questions. Then the dish is taken back to the kitchen to proportionate it into individual portions as shown in the pic below. This way, we got to take the photos in peace without having to scramble for the food from the main plate. Absolutely fabulous!

Individual tasting portions

Mint Soursop Blast and Pladib Art - individual tasting portion

pla dib is located in 1/1 soi Areesampan 7, Pharam 6 Road, Bangkok where else in Singapore they're known as Raw Kitchen Bar which is interestingly located in an old firestation at 276 Upper Bukit Timah Road.

Thank you so much to Sherlene, management, chef and staff of pla dib, Nigel, Anna and everyone else for such a wonderful evening. We'll be back, promised ;-)

Review: Janwa Thai Restaurant

**Pork Free**

After trying Restoran Krua Thai, we were hankering for more. A neighbour of my parents recommended Janwa Thai Restaurant in Bandar Menjalara (the older part where plenty of steamboat restaurants are located). She said it's authentic and so the following week in tow with more people in the family, we went out looking for Janwa Thai Restaurant. It's located in an air conditioned corner shop behind Petronas side, opposite Frame Network (the frame shop who popularised 3D framing after McD's Hello Kitty craze).

With 5 adults and 1 child, we could order more stuff and so here we go. Mom said she wants a Paku in Sambal Belacan (RM12). It must have been a long time to see paku, a type of ferns, in a menu. The ferns came crunchy in a light fragrant sambal belacan gravy.

JT - Paku in Sambal Belacan (RM12)

They recommended their Fried Tofu (RM8) which is a specialty. The tofu pieces are just simply deep fried plain tofu served with Thai sweet and sour chilli sauce. Looked ordinary but crispy upon biting with the smooth and soft centre bursting out. Would be great to eat it with Krua Thai's chilli sauce yumyum.

JT - Fried Tofu (RM8)

We have a Green Chicken Curry (RM12) which is just mediocre but the portion was rather generous.

JT - Green Chicken Curry (RM12)

Next, the Kerabu Chicken Feet (RM12) arrived. This is my parents favourite dish. The chicken feet is crunchy, served with raw red onions, tomatoes and a tangy lime and vinegar dressing peppered with chillies and lemongrass.

JT - Kerabu Chicken Feet (RM12)

We were comparing these Pandan Leaves Chicken (RM2 per piece) with Krua Thai's. Krua Thai's chicken is very much smaller and was deep fried longer to a crisp where else Janwa Thai is tender and juicy with each bite. We preferred the version here even though I was longing for Krua Thai's chilli sauce to go with these.

JT - Pandan Leaves Chicken (RM2 per piece)

JT - Pandan Leaves Chicken - opened

By now, my brother who frequents BKK for business, joined us. He took a look at the table and his first sentence out was "wow very authentic looking Thai dishes". Since I'm not an expert, I just took note.

We were almost done with our rice when our Steamed Fish With Lime Sauce (RM33) arrived piping hot. The fish was fresh and I was literally drinking down the sauce. The sauce tasted just right, not overly sour.

JT - Steamed Fish With Lime Sauce (RM33)

For all the above dishes (mostly in small portion), we shared 3 bowls of rice (RM3 yeah my family is not rice bin - farn tung :p); 3 glasses of soya cincau (RM7.50 @ RM2.50 each); 1 glass of saleh plum juice (RM3) and 1 bowl of cendol (RM3) and the grand total came up to RM113.50 only!!! Price is pretty reasonable and there are plenty of parking spaces in the evening.

Review: Restoran Krua Thai

**Pork Free**

We have been meaning to check out this Thai restaurant, Restoran Krua Thai (literally means Thai kitchen) in this part of Kepong cos each time we passed by in the evening, the place is usually crowded which is a sure good sign. Even the hip C&C pair sang praises.

Our party of 3 adults and my boiboi arrived around 7.30pm and I tell you, business is roaring!!! The place is full house and quite a number of tables were waiting for their orders. We stood near a table at the five foot way hoping they'll hurry up with their meal hehe... nope we did not pressure them with our "stares" :p Anyway, I quickly placed our order first so that we don't need to wait too long. Well we got our table in about 15 mins and our food another 15 mins. Anyway, I guess the best time to come here is after 8pm for dinner as by then the crowd simmered down.

First to arrive was this non-spicy Claypot Japanese Tofu (Tow Foo Soong Kreang RM15) recommended for kids. We find it's way too watery and this is just mediocre. Kinda expensive with some carrots, mushrooms, baby corns, prawns and squid thrown in.

KT - Claypot Tofu (RM15)

Next came the Pandan Leaves Chicken (RM10). The chicken pieces were quite small but well marinaded and crispy on the outside. The chilli sauce that served with it is da bomb. Sweetish and sourish, went extremely well with the chicken. It was so good I was eating just the chilli sauce with my rice :p

KT - Pandan Leaves Chicken (RM10)

KT - Pandan Leaves Chicken = opened

Then we have Stir-fried Kai Lan with Salted Fish (Pad Kanna Plakem RM12). One can hardly go wrong with salted fish dishes and this came with generous amount of salted fish in rather large pieces. Ohhh yummsss... no need to say any more right?

KT - Stir-fried Kai Lan with Salted Fish (RM12)

We have the customary Tom Yam With Seafood (Tom Yam Nam Sai RM20). We find this tom yam is wayyyy too sweet... we thought we were drinking tong shui (sweet soup) hehe. Otherwise, if they have cut down the sugar to suit our Malaysian tastebud, then it will be great!

KT - Tom Yam With Seafood (RM20)

Lastly, I ordered another non-spicy dish for my boiboi... Pattaya Omelette with Chicken, Prawns and Squid Fillings (Kai Hor RM15). It's basically minced chicken, prawns and squid filling cook in a sweet and sourish light tomato sauce and wrapped in an omelette ala Nasi Pattaya. This was just ok but my boiboi wallopped 3/4 of them!

KT - Pattaya Omelette with Chicken, Prawns and Squid fillings RM15

They served steamed rice in individual aluminium bowls which needless to say is fragrant and fluffy. I think its RM1 per bowl. We have a Thai fragrant coconut at RM3.80 and a glass of Thai herbal tea that tasted like teh-o for RM2. In total we paid RM80 which we thought it's slightly on the high side.

We managed to try out another Thai restaurant in some other part of Kepong which is more authentic, will blog about it later this week.
