Orange Marbled Cake

Let's begin by me telling Skinny Mum and Family First thank you so much. Skinny Mum said my blog converted her family to love mooncakes and the simple recipes suited her new found interest - cooking. Family First gave Babe in the City - KL an award for being one of the coolest blog in her list. *sobs* I sincerely thank you both for these... reading two mentions in one morning could be a little overwhelming heh :p

Apologies to Family First, Nigel and Ciki for not participating and continuing with your meme/tag/award. I've mentioned sometime back that I'm not very fond of these, and at one point it was hard but I managed that very emo one. So thanks but no thanks.

Back to today's post... I just improvised on my Marbled Cake recipe and came out with this one, Orange Marbled Cake. Just need to substitute the milk with orange juice. On top of that, grated zest of an orange. The orange smell and taste was unbelievable. I was glad it made somebody's kid happy :p that day.

Orange Marbled Cake

Please excuse for the look of the cake. The crack was caused by putting too much batter into the loaf pan. I've read that to prevent that, you'll need to fill the pan half-way through and not any more.

Do soak the orange in hot water for a while to remove the wax off its skin. Errr for double security reason, I tend to give it a brush as well haha. Wash off with more hot water and wipe dry before zesting. I do this with my lemons too.

Meme: A-Z About Me

I was tagged by kittycat aeons ago on this A to Z meme. I used to participate in memes long time back, then I got very very busy and had no time to update my blog let alone find time to work on memes. I know, I'm very guilty cos I "FFK" (fong fei kei :p literally means let go aeroplane aka let her down) kittycat once when she tagged me and I never got round doing that meme. Sorry kittycat *show dopey eyes* I'm not very fond of working on memes now.

You know what kittycat? I actually composed this about 3 weeks ago just moments before I received the shocking news. I just can't bring myself to post this up until now. When I open the file up minutes ago, I've noticed that I've strangely left out one which was [R is for biggest regret:]. I supposed at that time, I just can't think of any but now I could. How ironic!

My biggest regret at the moment was not able to successfully organise a gathering with some friends and their kids. It's kinda hard when the parents either do not respond or they're busy, it's very frustrating but I don't blame anyone but myself. I should have been more persistent... sighhh but it's too late now. Unker Tee won't be able to attend physically anymore but I hope he will do so in spirit. However, this will not stop me. I will attempt another one which I sincerely hope there will be at least some responses. Wish me luck guys!

Goshhh... and look at [F is for favorite song at the moment]!!! I've placed there "Hau Jiu Bu Jian (Long Time No See) by Jacky Cheung". Awww man this is bad... real bad... in a strange way. *wipe tears*

No tagging but feel free to help yourself.

So folks, in the event I got tagged and decided to pass your meme, kindly accept my sincere apologies. I will try to my best to work on your tags but no promises there. Sorry...

Meme - 5 Things You Don’t Know About Me

I got tagged by Bee Yinn sometime back but kept dragging my feet cos I’m very lazy in doing homeworks memes. So if you tag me, most likely it will take me soooo long that I’ll only post this way after everyone or I’ve totally forgotten about it! Very slow infact until I got tagged the 2nd time round by FoodieLianne. Anyway, since this is only 5 items, I think I’ll do a quick one, food related of course.

  1. I HATE nangka or cempedak (jackfruit) –smell, sight errr taste, I don’t know since I’ve never place any in my mouth. I swear, not even once since I was born. I just can’t take the smell. People who knew me, my colleagues and families knew this but yet they always eat them in front of me to peeve me off. I will usually run far far away when I detect the smell. Poor hubby has to eat them out of the house otherwise he’ll have to sleep elsewhere but to share the same bed with me! Strangely, I have no problem with durian LOL.

  2. I’m very afraid of recipes with a long long list of ingredients. Make my head pusing (spin).

  3. I do not snack in between meals or rather hardly snacks. All this must thank my mom cos she bans all sorts of candies, chocolates and junk food when I was a kid. These stuffs are actually rare treats for me and my brothers but she was slightly more lenient with my brothers.

  4. I never started cooking until I moved into my own place with hubby in year 2001. Even that I also hardly ever cook cos it’s too troublesome and expensive to cook for 2. Hard to believe eh??? LOL... In fact hubby was so worried that during our courting days he kept asking me to pick up cooking from my mom, little does he know that my mom also started to cook only wayyy after she gave birth to my brothers. That too she had no choice cos my maternal grandma who does all the cooking had bad rheumatism on her legs, hence she can’t stand long. My mom had to reassure him that I should be able to cook once the time comes.

  5. I’m a glutton no thanks to my parents whom loved to try new dishes and new eating places since I was a kid. Best was to have foodie colleagues who will take the trouble to drive around town and sometimes outskirt just for lunch. They have all since left the company. How sad!

As usual, I'm not tagging anyone but if you feel like it, please help yourself with this...

Meme - 10 Things I Miss Of Mom's Cooking

Mike of Foodcrazee tagged me with this meme. Sounds simple but then again must we stop at 10? Aahaha sooo many nice goodies that my mom can churned out. After I've shifted away from home, the first few months were the hardest cos there were no homemade meals when I reached home for dinner. Hubby and I always eat out until we both so sien (bored). Since my boiboi is with my parents on weekdays now, I get to have at least 2 homemade meals in a week hehehe... don't miss the cooking so much these days woohooo...

Anyway, my homework said I gotta list 10 things, let's see... (not in order of preference)
  1. There is this dish of cubed dish of potatoes, chicken meat, onions and peas cooked with I dunno what condiments flavoured with loads of white pepper. Wahhh lurrrveee this dish, it's also great to eat it on its own hahaha and I know my brothers and I tend to curi (steal) spoonfuls of it when mom is not looking. Maybe one day I'll cook this dish but I need to ask her what condiments she used.
  2. Hainanese style chicken/pork chop, oh yeahhh, she's not Hainanese but she learnt this dish from her aunt. Wayyy better than Yut Kee's!
  3. Steamed minced pork topped with chopped dried octopus... wahlaueh she cooked this on the day I did not go home but got some leftover last week. I commented on it and suddenly 2 days later I'm savouring this. Gosshhh I love her for this!
  4. Tong shui (sweet soup) in any style... my hubby very lucky to have a MIL like her cos he simply love tong shui. Each time she will cook one big pot and tar pau (pack) one huge container back home for hubby to savour. This is what Cantonese say - YAU SEK YAU LEK!!!! (get to eat and get to bring back literally).
  5. Stir fried Shanghainese Nian Gao (a type of rice cake or pak kor meen in Cantonese). Liked this a lot since it involves a bit of work there. Her version was learnt from her super duper great cook SIL (my dad's sister). It's not dark in colour and it has loads of carrots and cabbages in there.
  6. Her way of pork chop where she will flatten slices of lean meat with the back of a chopper. The meat is cooked in sauce of oyster sauce and thick soya sauce with loads of pepper and dash of sugar. I can't describe the taste... it's peppery but yet slighlty sweet and it's simply delicious.
  7. Assam fish which she hardly cook these days. The taste of this dish has the right balance of tanginess, sweetness and spicyness. I guess she must have lost a bit of touch there since it has been so long she last made this.
  8. Fish (cencaru) stuffed with chilli paste... wahhhh now I'm salivating!!!! She'll need two days to get this done cos the first day she need to prepare the chilli paste of I've no idea what is inside (bad of me huh?) all painstakingly hand pounded and strictly no blender ok! Aiyoh it's lunch time soon, I think I need to find a place that sells this later.
  9. Sambal prawns with petai... I so the miss this now... maybe I should drop by Madam Kwan for a fix soon.
  10. Sambal heibee... err I think it's known as that. Pounded dried shrimps cooked in pounded shallots and chillies (not sure what else) until it's dry like serunding (floss). Ahhhh it's bliss... hehehe shhhh I tend to curi this by the spoonfuls too when she's not looking... shhhhh...
Awww man... there were many more leh... how? Nevermind lah... I'll keep them as it is first. Moms are the best cook don't they??? I know cos I've tasted my friends' mom cooking and they really kick ass too. I won't be tagging anyone, so if you feel like taking up this homework (meme), feel free to go ahead *wink*

23/5 Meme

Aiyah another homework for me! Me in super lazy mood actually hehehe... got tagged by Glutton Rabbit for this 23/5 meme. Let's see what it says...

This is how you do it:
1. Delve into your blog archive
2. Find your 23rd post
3. Find the fifth sentence
4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions: Ponder it for meaning, subtext or hidden agendas...
5. Tag five people to do the same

My 23rd post: Taro Rice Serves With BKT

The fifth sentence: Since they lived near Klang, the capital of BKT, they will pack the BKT from this famous shop before coming over.

My take: Darn, I am not really crazy about BKT one ler, let alone go all the way to Klang to eat BKT! Hehehe my friend, KlipschJ, always invite me to go Klang to look for this bar sang jiok (Klang bird), Phangan, for BKT on Saturday mornings. Aiyoh friend, my boiboi wakes up around 9am, how lah to wait for you all at 9am, in Klang some more??? Kekekeke sorry arhhh... me in lazy mood. Friday mah.

Ok, I need to put a stop to all these so called meme, aiyoh after a while they're like chain mails unless they're super interesting, so I'm not going to tag anyone. Kakaka I can hear a sigh of relieve of 5 people.

There Rabbit, my homework kautim (finished) and I pass up to you ok. *wink*

Meme: Childhood Memories

I got tagged by the superb cook, boo_licious, at masak-masak. This round of meme is food related childhood memories. Gosh... my memory is really failing me... it's so hard to recall them especially on food.

You see, I don't really eat when I was a child. All I remember was there will always be Miss Ruth Tan (rotan in Malay or rattan/cane in English) accompanying me when my mom feed me lunch and dinner. Hehehe I always keep the food (rice or porridge) in my mouth without chewing them. Hence, I always get lotsa attention from Miss Ruth Tan when I was a child and by the way, during my childhood days, they're not known as child abuse!! Even though I don't eat much, I was errr pretty chubby... see this fei mui (fat little girl in Cantonese). Hahahaha that's me when I was toddler. So chubby, face so round... until now I'm still chubby and round urgghh!

After some checking on the food blogs around, I found the answer in Cathy's My Little Kitchen, apparently this meme was started off at a group blog called The Unrepentant Individual. An individual by the name of Brad Warbiany started the ball rolling by giving the meme a title Time to Unleash a Plague and it has nothing to do with food hahaha... See how things have advanced.

Ok the gist of this meme is pretty simple, write about FIVE food from your childhood that you've missed. Next, you'll need to remove the blog #1 from the following list and bump everyone up one notch. Place your blog in the last spot (#5). Remember to link up the blogs in the list. Then tag THREE bloggers to finish up your task. I've taken boo's lead via Oswego Tea since Belly-Timber have 2 bloggers tagged and so is boo's.

1. A Finger in Every Pie
2. The Traveler's Lunchbox
3. Oswego Tea
4. Masak-masak
5. Babe in the City KL

Here we go now...

Sundays Breakfast
Those days we hardly ever eat out except on Sunday mornings. My dad will wake my brothers and I early in the morning just to go to Yut Kee for breakfast. Darn... my brothers and I would grumble and grumble and trying to drag our feet trying to get outta bed on Sunday mornings. Hahaha... I have to say the breakfast at Yut Kee is really worth it. Imagine having delicious pork chop, chicken chop, Hainan style fried noodles, lum meen, roti babi... super yummy Hainanese style fare! Sorry hah... me super lazy to do translation. Oh oh oh... AND those delicious kaya swiss rolls and marble cakes that mom will tarpau (take-away) back. Check this lovely pork chop... yumyum topped with delicious gravy, peas, tomatoes, onions and deep fried potatoes. Hmm I think I must ask my mom to cook me some soon hehehe yumyum. Thanks to Wai Meng of Friedchillies for the visual.

Childhood Gems
boo_licious mentioned this in her meme too. Hey who would forget this Gem biscuit topped with multi-coloured sugar icing. My mom bought a pack from the market recently and my boiboi was captivated. Hahaha... I guess this will continue to be it for generations! Usually I'll eat the icing first before stuffing in the biscuit. Sighhh those were the days.

Chickadees
Who could forgot the famous Charlie Chickadees advert??? Opps that showed my age ain't it? Hahaha, this fave childhood snack disappeared from the market for many many years and recently made a comeback. I was quite excited when I first saw the advert on telly recently. I've no idea it was relaunched until I saw this advert since I don't browse at snacks section. I'm not a big time snacks eater. Got all excited when I saw an opened pack on my colleague's desk. He offered me some wahhhhhh the taste is still exactly the same as the way I remember it! Check out the new packaging over at Lilian's blog. Besides Chickadees, I missed the taste of then, Cheezels and Twisties. They tasted different somehow these days. Is it only me? By the way, my brothers and I are really a deprived lot, we only get to eat snacks once in a long long while as treats. Snacks and chocolates are forbidden food in the household then. Sometimes my uncle will smuggle buy some on the pretext of eating it himself but of course he will shared it with us eventually.

Oh dear only THREE??? Urrghh TWO more to go... what else I've missed huh???

Van Houten's Orange Bitter Chocolate
Ahhhh yes, I remember this since Van Houten no longer in available in this country. It has since replaced with the brand Vochelle from the same manufacturer if not mistaken. I was too young to know but my auntie who was staying with us then used to buy them. She would sneaked some for me since my dictator mom forbade us from eating any sweets nor chocolates when we were young. There are loads of chocolates in the fridge now but none of us would touch them hahaha... I tell you, I simply love this even though it's slightly on the bitter side. I love the orange flavour, it don't taste "fake" unlike some brands these days. Well not that I eat loads of chocolates.

Thanks to my mom's action, we all grew up pretty healthy without having the habit to snack on junk food right up till now. Maybe occasionally we'll indulge but we do not have any cravings for sweets, crisps or chocolates.

Granma's Cooking
There is this particular dish that my paternal granma cooked, I can't really recall what meat she used and what sauce she used to cook it. I was way too young then, most prolly around 9 or 10. All I could remember was it uses those super sour belimbing assam. Super delicious and tangy in taste when cooked. My neighbour used to have a tree in their front yard. My girlfriends and I would pluck the fruits from the tree and play masak-masak with them other than popping them into our mouth, chew and squint our eyes for the tiny little fruit is pretty lethal in the sour department. I googled for the resources and found out the scientific name is Averrhoa Bilimbi. Read more about it here.

Phew... I've completed my homework for 5 food related childhood memories. I'm gonna pass the baton to:

1. Cyrene of My Monologues;
2. aC of Notions of aC; and
3. Dr Chen of Ramblings...

Have fun guys and gals!

Meme: The Cook Next Door

UPDATED on 29 June 2005:

Arrghhh, my post half disappeared. Thanks to my itchy fingers for updating this. Sighhh I gotta recall what I wrote. Darn I shouldn't have hit the Recover Post... super duper cheesed off now!

This was what left after I hit Recover Post:

I’ve got my first meme tagged by Lilian.
So what I should do now??? Answer them kar??? Ok lah… here we go…

What is your first memory of baking/cooking
on your own?

I have very vague
memory of this. Must have been during my teens and since I was in commerce
stream, I do not get to attend home science. My cooking interest was sparked by
those early days cooking shows on TV2 or TV3 (local stations and we do not have
cable TV back then). I’ve made
Coconut Candy a few times on my own and did not do much cooking as I find it a
trouble to use my mother’s kitchen with the constant “supervision and
nagging”.

Who had the
most influence on your cooking?

It gotta be my mother and also those cooking shows. Well, not that
she really started cooking until she was way beyond her mid-30s. No choice I
supposed as my grandmother who cooks for us had passed away. She had to take
over else the whole household will starve to death. Luckily she’s those type who
can experiment her way around. I’m proud to say she’s a good cook now.

Do you have an old photo as
“evidence” of an early exposure to the culinary world and would you like to
share it?

Sorry don’t have any,
in fact I’ve only started most of my cooking after I’ve shifted into my own home
with hubby.

Mageiricophobia - do
you suffer from any cooking phobia, a dish that makes your palms sweat?

Making pastry dough from
scratch. I always find it a great challenge but maybe someday I'll tackle it.

What would be your most valued
or used kitchen gadgets and/or what was t

So here I go again to continue what I could recall. Sigh it might be slighty different ok. Damn it!

I’ve got my first meme tagged by Lilian. So what I should do now??? Answer them kar??? Ok lah… here we go… might be slightly different from my earlier post.

Making pastry dough from scratch. I always find it a great challenge but maybe someday I'll tackle it.

What would be your most valued or used kitchen gadgets and/or what was the biggest let down?

I used to use a Japanese brand cleaver/chopper. It's very heavy and I got tired easily after using it for a while. One day whilst we were shopping, we dropped by the Zwilling JA Henckels boutique. Whoa, hubby were amazed with all the sharp stuff or shall I say "gadgets" (men just love gadgets! sighhh...) in the shop. They even have some fruits and vegetable to help you test out their wares. I tell you, once we started chopping and slicing there's no stopping! Best test was the carrot slicing, whoa the knives slide thru the hard carrots without much effort. We were converted! So far the Zwilling JA Henckels Chefs Knife has been a great help in the kitchen. We've added a few more items from the same family - a couple of sharpeners and paring knife. Would love to buy the whole range but that's greedy hehehe cos I doubt we'll get to use every darn knives in the whole knife block. Did I mention how expensive they are in Malaysia??

Name some funny or weird food combinations/dishes you really like - and probably no one else!

I love to mixed smashed up hard boiled egg in a cup of local sweetened black coffee. My paternal grandma taught me how to eat hard boiled egg this way. The yolk creamed up like thick creamer. It's utterly delicious.

Hehe I also like to have my durians with hot white plain rice. My paternal grandma taught me this too. Whooo, hot fluffy rice with creamy durian... it's divine!

What are the three eatables or dishes you simply don’t want to live without?ONLY 3!!??!!

1) Bread - I can have bread every meal which hubby would detest! I love them plain; sweet; with jam, peanut butter, kaya, cheese, ham, tuna etc; dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

2) Curry Laksa with loads of kerang... drooling.

3) Eggs in all sorts of way as they're so versatile.

Any question you missed in this meme, that you would have loved to answer? Well then, feel free to add one!

Three quickies:

Your favorite ice-cream… : Sherbets from NZ Ice-cream

You will probably never eat… : Dog

Your own signature dish… : Can't single out one.

Who do you want most to cook you dinner? (added in by Oslo Foodie)

Renee of Shiokadelicious.

And my own question that I would loved to answer:

OK I've forgotten what I've asked myself.

I've tagged the following people:

Cyrene of My Monologues. She have posted up here and you must read Shook Me All Night Long reply after he got tagged by her hahahaha... it was so hilarious.

Dr Chen of Ramblings... Woohoo, she qualified for the Malaysian chapter of Fear Factor!!!

Elise of Simply Recipes Nothing from Elise, I guess she dislike meme. Sorry Elise.

Blog Revamping

Hello... I'm in the midst of revamping my blog to make my life a little easier. So do not be alarmed as work is still under construction.
