Review: Restaurant Wong Fook Kee

On the day I posted up the Harm Choy Tong (Pickled Mustard Cabbage Soup), I was secretly hoping for a bowl to warm me up on that super cold afternoon (it was raining heavily that day). Sighhh but have to wait for weekend before I could cook another pot. Fate would have it when we decided to drop by Restaurant Wong Fook Kee at Tengkat Tong Shin. Whilst ordering, they ask if we wanted any soup, hubby asked what kinda soup. When the words "harm choy ngarp" (pickled mustard cabagge and duck soup) came up, hubby quickly said yes... hahaha he's a soup lover. Later I confessed to him that I was hoping for some that afternoon and he burst out laughing.

The soup came and we both happily slurping away. Certainly warm us up! I was glad this is the boiled soup and not quick-boiled type. This one have enough "fire" (meaning have boiled for long hours). This soup has duck meat, pickled mustard cabagge, tomatoes and sour plum inside, which is quite typical Nyonya style.

WFK - Duck and harm choy soup

Wong Fook Kee's specialty is actually their claypot mutton but we did not order any since hubby don't really fancy mutton, instead I asked for their Harm Yue Far Larm Poe which is claypot pork belly with salted fish. Sighhh I forgot to ask them to add more salted fish cause it lack of the salted fish taste. Otherwise the pork belly is quite tasty.

WFK - harm yue far larm poe (claypot pork belly and salted fish)

I asked for the 4 Heavenly King vegetable dish, known so by cooking 4 types of vegetables usually a combination of any of these four angled beans, brinjal, french beans, petai, or ladies fingers in sambal belacan. This dish is only okay but I'm not complaining since it has my fave petai inside hehe.

WFK - sei tai tien wong (the four Heavenly Kings)

The dishes and one bowl of normal sized rice plus one bowl of small rice costed RM25.70 without any drinks. As far as I remember, Restaurant Wong Fook Kee has been around for ages serving Chinese dishes for lunch and dinner. They serve "homey" kinda dishes. Give them a try!

Review: Restoran Muar

I'm taking a break from tweaking my new clothes. Still can't figure what went wrong with my labels and International Foodies links. It's not helping when my line is yo-yoing sighhh...

Remember the night we got turned away to Max! Kitchen & Wine??? Well, we ended up at Restoran Muar right across the road. Had meant to try this place for some time back but some how never got the chance.

RM - Restoran Muar

We sat on a huge round table since there isn't any smaller tables left... seems very promising. Behind us, there is a large group of diners chowing down and I tried to peep back, left and right before I check the simple menu. Hubby then got the lady boss to recommend us dishes.

Started off with a dish of Petai Squid and Prawn (RM16 for small). I don't really like the sambal taste of this dish. Somehow something is missing but I can't pinpoint, and I hate chewing on the large pieces of dried chilli bits. Luckily, the seafood is fresh and loved the petai bits.

RM - Petai Squid & Prawn (RM16.00)

Hubby originally asked for Kangkung Belachan but they ran out of kangkung, hence we opted for sweet potato shoots instead (RM6.00). Aisay, they've used the same sambal as in the Petai Squid and Prawn. Had to dig out those chilli bits, so minus points there.

RM - Stir fried sweet potato shoots (RM6.00)

Next, we have this Crispy Fried Eggs (RM5.00). 3 eggs deep fried into a lacey omelette, served with a few dashes of dark soy sauce. The simplest dish but yet the most satisfying of all!!! Loved the crispy whites coupled with the runny egg yolk... simply divine. Hubby told me that his mom used to deep fry their eggs this way, wahhh... so nice but not my mom as she usually shallow fry them.

RM - Crispy Fried Eggs (RM5)

RM - runny yolks of the fried eggs

We ended our dinner with cendol of fine shavings of ice, drizzled with gula melaka and thin coconut milk; and topped with cendol. As we dug further, red beans are abound underneath the ice. It was on a special price of RM1.00 but it's a very small bowl. Hubby asked for second. This time round, the lady boss made it herself and the ice was not shaved as finely as the Indonesian helper. A week later, we are delighted that they started to serve cendol in two sizes, big for RM2.50 and small bowl remained at RM1.00.

RM - cendol (RM1 small bowl)

The sambal dishes are not to my liking but there are a few more other dishes that I would loved to try, so might go back there for them. Will comment further then. Was told that reservation is a must on weekends.

MAX!mum experience

Updated 20 September 2009: Max! Kitchen has shifted to IHaus in Imbi which is bigger and has a better parking facility.

--------------

'Twas a long dinner at Max! Kitchen & Wine last night, not because of the waiting nor the crowd, but merely the hospitality of owner and chef, Max Chin. We would love to thank Max and his team for going all out to make the dinner a memorable one.

Max have created a mini degustation dinner for us, sampling about 90% of what's on the current menu so it's not really something different. The out of the menu experience was merely sizing down the portion so that we can try the signature dishes.

Since we reached there at 7.oopm, we managed to get a parking slot right at Max!'s door step LOL... darn lucky. We were so early that they have yet to even switch on the air-cond haha... Instead of Table No. 1, we we ushered to the table next to the bar, nearest to the light source. I supposed he knew I needed good lighting to take decent pics, plus it's easier to monitor us from his cooking station. Max came downstairs to greet us and spent at least 15 minutes chatting up before he sprung into action.

First course: Scallops topped with sun dried tuna. I knew Max picked the largest 4 scallops for us. They're succulent and fresh sitting pretty on top of capsicum confit.

Max! Course #1 Scallops with sun dried tuna

Second Course: Lightly seared tuna chunks in skewers served with truffle oil and tartare sauce. Simply loved the eggs holder where they were served in. Didn't knew it was truffle oil until Max told us to dip in the oil. I had some earlier and I was thinking what was in the oil that it is so fragrant.

Max! Course #2 Tuna served with truffle oil and tartare sauce

Third Course: Land and Sea. The sea is represented by the yabbies whilst the land is the potato. Nope you don't get chucks or slices of potatoes but they're in the smooth creamy gravy which we lapped up happily with our spoon. I didn't noticed the spoon until Max told us so. The gravy is simply marvelous, nearly wanna lick the plate clean!

Max! Course #3 Land & Sea

Next, we have a palate cleanser of lime sherbet with bubbly champagne poured over it. Not too tangy and certainly very refreshing. We certainly welcomed this to clear our palate for our mains. By now, I was getting a bit worried cos I was already half-filled. Nearly fainted when Max said we still have another THREE mains to go.

Fourth Course: Duck breast in two style. One side pan seared on a bed of polenta, the other side hickory smoked served with berries jam or was it cranberry?? Hubby dugged into the smoked slice and he was watching me taking my portion. *Ding ding* I looked at him and we both agreed the lightly smoked slices are absolutely a WOW. The slices were tender even though they looked throughly cooked. Tasted like roasted duck but better. After tasting the smoked portion, the pinkish pan seared portion certainly paled in comparison. We loved the polenta though, tasted eggy. We could be biased since we lurrrveee eggs!

Fifth Course: Lamb cutlet on a bed of artichokes with mint sauce. We have this before so no need to comment here.

Max! Course #6b Lamb Cutlet

Sixth Course: Wagyu beef cheeks, thank goodness it's only one slice, otherwise, don't know how to finish up. Meat overload haha...

Max! Course #7 Wagyu Beef Cheeks

Seventh Course: Dessert Trio, finally!!! In this platter, there's a Valrhona Chocolate Souffle which came sitting tall but collapsed just before the click of my camera. I oops out loud till our neighbouring man craned his neck to see what was I doing. I knew he had been curious with our food and attention since our food were sort of different from theirs *giggle*. I ate my souffle with extra care since it's so HOT but I spied hubby one is runnier and he's on 7th Heaven! Best eaten with the cold cold vanilla bean ice-cream. There is a lone kataifi pastry filled with strawberry.

Max paired matching wines for hubby which I declined since I'm still under medication. He offered to fix me some pau sum soe (hair of ginseng roots) after hearing that I still haven't recover which I politely declined as well. Very shy already with all the hospitality.

And so we thought we have ended our dinner with coffee and tea but we got a surprise cake. Max and I very paiseh cos he thought it was my birthday hehehe... his wait staff came with candle and all but I kept telling him to forget about lighting the candle. By then Max had finish cooking for the day and sat down with us. It was then he found out that hubby is from his Hakka clan. Adui, the next thing I knew the conversation was interpersed with Hakka which I had to keep up with. It hit homerun when Max mentioned their clan's fave swear phrase. I chuckled out loud but they both didn't what it was all about. Not until I told hubby later in the car. It took me countless lessons just to say out this phrase correctly, oh my! Please don't ask me what it is as it's pretty foul hehe. They certainly got chummy... If not the other 2 guys at Table No. 1 call him to join them for a drink (no choice since it has been many 7 minutes and 5 seconds that he had promised them earlier), I think we would have been the first customer to arrive and the last to leave at 10.45pm.

In total, we have 3 appetisers, 3 mains, dessert, coffee/tea + wines. When the bill came, I was shocked... errr not that it was overly expensive but very reasonable I would say with the kind of quality served. I'm contemplating to reveal the figure but nahhh... I'll keep that as a suspense.

Last night's dinner is not so much on food and drinks. It's more like a celebration, not only of our marriage of 9 years but certainly in celebration of a new found friend in Max and the Max!mum touch that we have experienced.

Once again, Max, thank you so much.

ps: Our first visit was only last week, check here.

Max It To My Heart

Updated 20 September 2009: Max! Kitchen has shifted to IHaus in Imbi which is bigger and has a better parking facility.

--------------

Ahhhh... I'm still on cloud nine albeit coming down with a cold. Thanks, Love, for fulling your promise :x

Hubby came to picked me on Tuesday and he told me that he's taking me to Max! Kitchen. I was like huh??? What's today's date??? Hehehe... I thot I've missed some important date that I ought to remember. He just said he need to full fill his promise to me. Hmm how nice, so ok we headed to Tengkat Tongshin and managed to get a parking in front of Bollywood after circling 2 rounds using the backlane. We were filled with enthusiasm but only to be clouded with a "We're sorry we can't accommodate you cos we're full." Hubby looked around and asked but there are still so many empty tables. The poor wait staff had to explained that Max is cooking alone that night and he has many diners to attend to, so won't be able to cope. Sighhh... what a let done.

So hubby made a reservation there and then to make a come back on Thursday as they were running a private function on Wednesday. So here we are again last night. We got lucky again in getting a parking bay in front of the Korean rest house cum restaurant next to Bollywood! Hahaha... Good sign indeed.

Since I've already made up my mind on what to order, I let hubby take his own course. I've asked for Sea Scallops with Mojama and Wagyu Beef Cheeks with Mushroom Ragout served with Polenta. Hubby opted for Yabbies Lobster Tail with sauteed avocado, garden chive and white balsamic and Lamb Cutlet.

Since I was amongst the last of the floggers to try Max! Kitchen, I took a good look at their pictures this morning. Seems like serving and presentation varies from time to time. I was actually armed with my mini tripod last night but too embrassed to set it up since there is a group of 8 diners on my right and another couple on my left. Most of my pics turned up very dark hence they're heavily doctored to make an appearance here.

After 2 servings of bread, my scallops arrived, hubby exclaimed out loud "Wow the scallops are huge!" They definitely are! Each piece have a ham liked sliver perched in the middle, tasted like ham but they're not. Found out from Precious Pea's post that these are sun-dried tuna loin! These scallops are utmost succulent and tasted so fresh that I can almost smell the sea. He thinks the same too after downing one. My scallops came in a light bed of butterhead and red chicory (I think) with a drizzling of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, topped with black pepper and sea salt.

Max - Pan-Seared Scallops02 Max - Pan-Seared Scallops01

I was eyeing on hubby's yabbies since the presentation looked so lovely with 2 large slivers of anchovies. I knew he enjoyed it and shared a piece with me. They were evenly cooked and again, very fresh indeed.

Max - Yabbies Lobster Tails

After some waiting, my beef cheeks came piping hot! The beef cheeks are so so so tender as the meat is interpersed with some layers of gelatinous fat, the result of long braising. Loved the selection of mushrooms especially the morel which absorbed the most flavour.

Max - Braised Shiraz Wagyu Beef Cheeks with mushroom ragout

I exchanged a piece of my beef cheeks with hubby's lamb cutlet. Since he asked for well done, I find them slightly tough on the outter bits but I still enjoyed the tender bit in the middle. Hubby still detected some gamey smell on his cutlets but definitely not on mine hehehe. He's extremely sensitive with this gamey smell, but he claimed they were still good in his books. Max came to say a quick hi, and he knew very well at least one of us is a blogger since he spied me whipping my camera out :p

Max - lamb cutlet

By now, my stomach was bursting from all the food I had. Can't even finish my polenta, pea sprouts and mushrooms which hubby happily volunteered mopping up the remainder gravy with a piece of bread. I refused dessert but the glutton decided he want to have the Crisp Kataifi Pastry.

Whilst waiting, hubby mentioned that we should come here again to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I nodded my head in agreement but huh I was nearly jolted out of my chair... cos it's just next week LOL! He went to the cooking counter and spoke to Max. Not sure what was transpired, all I know was Max promised to have something out of the menu for us and he will place us at table no. 1 at the corner. I didn't expected this to happen at all! Can't wait!

The dessert came pretty fast as the orders thinned out. The kataifi pastry are wrapped around strawberry with passion fruit and placed on a bed of fruit salad of kiwi, dragonfruit and strawberry. We detected that these fruits were infused with rum or maybe some other liquor. Very lovely indeed. In between these pastries, there are 2 scoops of coconut ice-cream served on spoons. Loved this ice-cream flavoured with coconut and tasted a bit tangy with dots of crunchy chocolate chips.

Max - Crisp Kataifi Pastry 01 Max - Crisp Kataifi Pastry 02

The wait staff served us a couple of Cowboy shots which Max mentioned that only his place have these shots originated from Australia. The shot glass is made of plastic and from the outside, you can see 2 different liquid spiralling down. After peeling off the cover, inside revealed half a portion Bacchus Velvet Cream and half portion of Bacchus Butterscotch Schnapps. We quickly downed the smooth concoction.

Review: Tong Shin Char Kuey Teow

**Non-Halal Post**

tong shin char kueh teow

That was my sinful dinner sometime back! Packed with carbo, fats and lard... it's no other than a plate of Char Kuey Teow (fried flat noodles) which I opted for yellow noodles and kuey teow (flat rice noodles) with generous amount of shrimps, sliced Chinese sausages, eggs, bean sprouts, chives and fresh cockles. If you don't fancy blood red cockles, you can asked them for cooked cockles version but I liked my cockles fresh, to be mixed into the hot-off-the-wok noodles to avoid being over cooked.

Should you happened to be in the golden triangle, do drop by Kedai Makan Goreng Kuey Teow Tong Shin. This particular husband-and-wife team has been in business round a corner lot along Tengkat Tong Shin (opposite Radius International Hotel) aeons ago and they're still popular in Kuala Lumpur as ever.

Their Char Kuey Teow packed a punch with enough "wok hei" (heat of a wok), generous ingredients and of course the right amount of oil and sauces that emits a very very fragrant aroma. They opens from noon till 2.00 am but try not to be on the dot at noon, sometimes the couple are not in the shop yet. Their helpers will tell us that their bosses are still sleeping and we need to wait for a short while before the couple come downstairs to "char" the "kuey teow".
