Review: Restaurant Wong Poh (Revisit)

**Non-Halal**

A friend recently discovered Restaurant Wong Poh serves fantastic crab dishes with reasonable prices. She has always been a big fan of Green View Restaurant but noticed that it was getting expensive as time goes by plus the cajoling of her son, she decided to give Wong Poh a go. So in order to taste more dishes, she rounded up some other friends making up to 7 of us for this trip last week.

Since she doesn't like the signature creamy butter crab that appears on every table, we have this Stir-fried Mee Hoon Crab. I have to say the rice vermicelli is fried with full of wok hei (breath of the wok) where the noodles remained stringy and chewy. It's not easy to fry rice vermicelli without it turning soft and not breaking up! The flavour was great too with the fresh sweetness goodness from the crab pieces.

The friend was raving over the Sang Har Meen (Fresh Water Prawns Noodles, RM72 for 2 portions) and so we have that too. Loved the rich eggy gravy that is so full of fresh prawn flavour. The prawn size is commendable too!

Wong Poh Restaurant

Next we have a Sweet and Sour Crab. In total we have around 7 medium sized crabs for the 2 crab dishes, I believed which costed RM201.10. Quite reasonable eh? As for this style of sweet and sour, the balance is there just that I didn't like how the egg appeared. I like mine to have an even small thin ribbons of egg.

The sweet and sauce sauce was a delight to be mopped up with deep fried mantous (6 pieces RM4.20).

We have 2 greens, one is the Stir-fried Baby French Beans (RM13). Can't really go wrong with this when the French beans remained crunchy as one chomped them up.

Wong Poh Restaurant

The friend had overheard us discussing about 4 Heavenly King (RM10) earlier, and so that's how a plate of that ended up on our table. This dish of spicy stir fried 4 variety of vegetables was one of the dish that went empty first. Wong Poh's version has my fave petai, yum yum, ladies fingers, 4 angle beans and long beans. It's not too hot and loved that the sambal paste has bits of fragrant dried shrimps.

The total bill of the above dishes plus a pot of Chinese tea with ice (RM10.50) came up to RM310.80! What do you think of the price we have paid? Was it reasonable in your pocket too?

Btw, it's pleased to note that they have expanded to 3 shop lots now as compared to 2 when we first went there. Best to call to make a reservation especially on weekends as it can be really packed. I doubt you would want to wait for a table when everyone is slowly enjoying digging into their crabs!

Review: Restaurant Wong Poh

Spurned by backStreetGluttons recent post on Restaurant Wong Poh, I decided to heave my heavy bum to write this post up. Our family have a very late Father Day's celebration. One of my brother recommended to try this place which is new to the rest us. Since my aunt and cousin were around, we roped them in for dinner even though they have an early dinner that Sunday. So all in all there were 10 of us inclusive of my boiboi.

We started off with this Kerabu Octopus (RM15.00) that they recommended. When it came, my brother said "got cheated" hahaha when we saw it's just those baby octopus that came straight out from a pack mixed with some mango, red chillies and red onion strips. Served with a squeeze of lime and sprinkling of crushed peanuts. Overall, I give this an okay, quite refreshing and I liked those not too sour mango strips.

WP - kerabu octopus (RM15)

We asked for a tofu dish (RM16.00) and came this deep fried homemade tofu bricks braised with a few types of mushrooms. Nothing spectacular here.

WP - tofu with mushrooms (RM16)

Next, we have a plate of stewed pork belly with peanuts (RM15.00). I like the huge peanuts which were stewed to tender perfection without turning mushy. My boiboi lapped the gravy up with some fried mantau.

So it seems fried sang cheung (RM15.00) is Wong Poh's specialty and my brother said it's very good. That's how it ended up on our table. Seriously up till now, we're still debating which part of the pig this came from. Some said it's some part of the intestine but my mom said it's fallopian tubes. Maybe I should ask my butcher tomorrow. Anyhow, these sang cheung came fried with green chilli padis and crispy dried shrimps. This dish with 3 types of crunchiness of varying degrees melded together very well indeed. Definitely a must have.

WP - fried sang cheung (RM15)

I can't recall what type of fish is this, could be red snapper (hoong joe?? I'm really lousy with fish names). Mom chose the fish but I asked it to be steamed Teo Chew style (RM52.30). We loved the slight sourish soup and lapped up most of the soup. Certain parts of the fish were slightly over steamed, hence a bit coarse.

WP - steamed snapper teochew style (RM52.30)

Mom asked for the Four Heavenly Kings (RM12.00). Wong Poh's version have long beans, ladies fingers, four angled beans and petai combinations. Stirred in sambal belacan, nothing special here, lacking a bit in "wok hei" (breath of the wok).

WP - four heavenly Kings (RM12)

Ahhh and finally the piece de resistance - Butter Crabs (RM67.20, I think 2 crabs only if not mistaken)!!! Now this looks like the MUST ORDER dish in Wong Poh cos EVERY single table have a pot of this! Amazing. I know my boiboi was busy mopping the gravy up with mantau and so were the rest of us that we have to asked for more mantau. The waitress "hijacked" one set to serve us first LOL! The fried ones are nicer.

Simply loved the freshness and meatiness of the crabs coupled with the aromatic buttery sauce...! This gravy is slightly thicker than De Foodland Seafood Restaurant and it's way better.

WP - butter crabs (RM67.20)

We have a pot of tea (RM11.50), I think 5 plates of rice (RM3.50), peanuts (RM1.50) plus 5% Government tax, so our dinner costed us a total of RM224.18, seems reasonable. Overall, the dishes are just fine but will come here just for the Butter Crabs. Any other style that are nice here??? Leave me some comments. Thanks.

Have a nice weekend.

Review: De Foodland Seafood Restaurant

**Non-Halal Posting**

It's funny even though my side of the family have been residing in Kepong for ages but yet no one at home ever mentioned to go to De Foodland Seafood Restaurant over at Bandar Menjalara. I've read many bloggers from afar singing praises of this place but yet to come across neighbours and friends in the area recommending this place. So finally, I suggested one day we should try this out at least for once, just to satisfy my curiosity.

Upon reaching De Foodland, haiyah, my parents recognised the signage and mentioned that they have eaten at this place during their "shack" days but strangely they never brought me along grrrr... daddy explained to me their location back then, when I recalled they did mentioned about this dai chow (big stir fry) hidden somewhere in the hilltop factory area that can cook up many many styles of crabs! Little did they know De Foodland have expanded so big... at least 2 shop lots, upstairs and downstairs!

Back on our food ordering for 7 adults, hubby asked for chuk tarn (bamboo clams) done kum heung (spicy dried shrimps with curry leaves) style (RM15). The clams were way too small to our liking even though when we asked about the size, they claimed its medium but really, they're so thin. The whole plate is covered mostly with shells! Tastewise oklah. Appologies over the photos cos everyone attacked them before the plate reached my side for decent photo taking LOL.

DF - kum heong chuk tarn

Next came Mutt Chup Pai Kuat (honeyed pork ribs RM12.00) which is tender and tasty where the sweetness is not over cloying.

DF - honeyed pork ribs

The Foo Yue Yau Mak (stir-fried romaine lettuce in fermented beancurd RM10.00) were fried with enough "wok hei" (breath of a wok). Fermented beancurd used was just right without being too salty.

DF - foo yue yau mak

Loved this deep fried beancurd bricks (RM10.00) with the accompanied chilli dip. Minced seafood can be detected.

DF - deep fried tofu

The star of the night were the crabs dishes. We have the Creamy Butter Crab which has a lovely butter flavoured gravy. The creaminess is just nice, not to heavy. Funny, my mom who is not a big fan of butter, cream nor milk... tried one piece and did not complained any milkiness in them and I think she ate more than one piece!

DF - Creamy Crabs

Daddy asked for Sweet and Sour Crabs, which in contrast looked so right as compared to our previous experience. It's full of chopped garlic and ginger that enhanced the taste wonderfully. We lapped up the gravy with deep fried bun (RM3.00) and added another roll that the server hijacked to serve us first. Sometimes sitting near the kitchen could be an added advantage hahaha...

DF - sweet n sour crabs

Both crabs dishes costed us RM104.00 which is pretty fair but then again we detected some bitterness in the meat. The captain explained that at certain season the crabs from Indonesia would have slight bitterness in them which they claim could be due to their diet. Oh well... not that it's so bitter, luckily we did not order the steamed ones.

Overall I would say their dishes were so so only, even my dad said the same but reasonabily priced though. At least I knew, he enjoyed the crabs a lot. We ought to just stick to their crabs then huh??
