Review: Restoran Mexim Dim Sum @ Kajang

**Non-Halal**

Even though we stayed south of Kuala Lumpur, we hardly venture to Kajang unless it's absolutely necessary like going to the post office to collect registered letters. There were post offices nearer to home but I've no idea why we have to go to the one in Kajang town. Anyway, we just woke up one morning and lazing around... trying to plan what we need to do for the day. One of it well, was to collect a letter from Kajang and since we're going to be there, may as well plan my list of supplies to get from Bagus bakery supply shop for my fruit cakes. The next thing, Capt'n Hook ask me if there's any place to have breakfast around Kajang. With the convenience of having the Macbook next to the bed, I went on to Jon's blog to check what's on offer around Kajang town and I hit jackpot with Restoran Mexim Dim Sum.

We got up and took a slow drive there. Ahhhh finally found the restaurant which located along the same row as Restoran Malaysia (Nyuk Lan Kajang Satay). Parking is a huge problem here even though it was on a weekday that we need to go round another huge round thru the town just in time for someone to vacate a slot in front of Restoran Malaysia. We were there on another weekend and it's equally as bad.

Anyway, the servers will bring the trays of steamed and deep fried dim sums. Just take your pick. Items like loh mai gai (steamed glutinous rice), baos, chu cheung fun (steamed rice rolls) and century egg porridge have to be ordered separately. Then order your drinks which of course Chinese tea would be most suitable to "wash away" the oiliness. Other than various types of Chinese tea, there are a couple of leung char (herbal tea) on offer.

Steamed dim sum baskets for selection

We have the usual items like steamed deep fried fish balls which is really bouncy with fish paste, not filled with flour. Xiu Mai totally filled with fresh minced pork! Other items either have minced pork or bouncy large shrimps which I believed bicarbonate soda is used but I'm not complaining when the shrimp is fresh!

As Capt'n Hook dug into his loh mai gai, after one bite... he declared that it was the most authentic loh mai gai ever! It reminded us of loh mai gai of our childhood days that is filled with a piece of chicken with bone, a slice of char siu, a large slice of lap cheung (Chinese sausage) and some pork bits. The glutinous rice texture is done perfectly... soft but yet retained the chewiness.

Loh mai gai

My char siu chu cheung fun is smooth and slippery but not the best though. Portion a little small too.

Chu cheung fun

Then we have the deep fried items like fu chuk rolls that are crispy on the outside filled with fish paste. Yeung Ngai Gua (brinjal stuffed with fish paste)... need I say more??? Just look at the amount of fish paste! Nice stuff!

Deep fried fu chuk

Stuffed brinjal

Woo Koo (Yam puffs) have fluffy skins, not oily at all. Can taste the yam and so much of moist char siu fillings inside!

Woo kok (yam puffs)

I was wondering how their baos would fare so I packed one dai bao (big bao), a couple of char siu baos, sang yuk baos and dau sar baos (red bean paste). The baos generally have very fluffy skin that does not stick to your teeth when one bite on them and not too thick with generous fillings.

Again the dai bao here is very old school. They really do have fillings like quartered hard boiled egg, a piece of chicken, mince meat with turnip slices and large piece of lap cheung so unlike other places where one could only find one clump of fatty minced meat!

Dai Bao

Dai Bao - halved

Char siu bao is top grade here with fair amount of fatty bits. Loved the sang yuk baos and the dau sar baos (sorry no pics).

Char Siu Bao

There's a Mexim branch in Seri Kembangan and Taman Connaught as stated on the plastic bag but I know the Taman Connaught one is closed and replaced with another restaurant. Prices are extremely reasonable with most of the items seen here priced at RM2.80 per plate. There is an item priced at RM4, hmmm which could be the dai bao???

We totally loved our discovery of one of the better dim sum place around with rather authentic fillings and flavours... totally old school that reminded us of how dim sum were like during our childhood days! Thanks to Jon for the wonderful intro ;-)

Review: Satay Malaysia aka Nyuk Lan Kajang Satay

SM - Satay Malaysia

I was going thru the latest pull-out of Flavours magazine which featured makan places around Kajang, Balakong, Seri Kembangan, Putrajaya etc... Came across Restoran Malaysia (Nyuk Lan Satay Kajang), gosh I haven't put up my post yet even though the pictures were already saved in draft mode for the longest ever. Lots of backlogs I have in here *blush*

Restoran Malaysia is another place to go for satay Kajang other then the famous Haji Samuri at Bangunan Dato' Nazir (next to the stadium) or those at the medan satay. We used to go to Haji Samuri pretty often until they have gotten too big over at Bangunan Dato' Nazir. They're now occupying the whole of ground floor. With brisk business, their satay suffered... cos they tend to cook in a haste and left many sticks uncooked.

The satay at Restoran Malaysia is comparable to Haji Samuri. I simply loved the beef satay (60 sens per stick) here. They're not over cooked and tasted juciy and tender. Not forgetting, they're very flavourful too. Chicken satay here is worth all my 60 sens cos I get to eat the whole stick of meat rather being interpersed with chicken skin!

SM - beef and chicken satay

Best dipped in the slight sweetish peanut sauce with a dollop of firery sambal for the extra zing. We loved how they served the ketupat, still in the tradisional way within the coconut leaves casing. First round of cucumber and onions (but most times they don't serve onions! duh...) is complimentary. Extra serving will be charged 50 sens. I wished they could serve their peanut sauce in a big bowl like Haji Samuri, otherwise it's quite a task getting their staff to bring in extra bowls of sauce (no extra charge for this though haha).

BTW, they serve fried rice and noodles too but seriously we won't bothered. They're really not up to mark, plus it's halal... how Hokkien fried noodles can taste delish without the obligatory chu yau char (lard)?? :p heh

Satay Kajang Hj Samuri

Darling hubby has been hankering for Satay Kajang Hj Samuri since two weeks ago but due to various commitment (well he blamed me haha) he did not get to eat them. He went out of town yesterday and called me on his way back telling me that he's going to stop by Satay Kajang Hj Samuri at the stadium to get his dose of satay (it's a Malay word which is widely used in the world now of grilled meat on a stick). Being such a darling, he packed some home for me as well.

On top of 10 sticks he ate there, both of us whacked another 24 sticks of chicken and beef satay. Sighhh he forgot to asked for deer meat satay as it tasted delicious the last time we were there.

Ok on a little of this particular place, Kajang, it's actually a small town in the suburb of Kuala Lumpur. As far as I could remember since I was a kid, Kajang is famous for satay. It's also known as Satay Town!!! No kidding. Well apparently, there is one particular stall selling delicious satay, it got famous and you've food crazy Malaysians who will drive all the way out looking for delicious food. Next thing you know, you've other satay stalls sprouting around and claiming them to be the famous satay Kajang. How typical!!!

It got on so popular that the town council erected a food court calling Medan Satay. This food court sells nothing but satay of course. In the course of expanding and in search of grilling different meats other than the original beef and chicken, they have now rabbit, deer, all sorts of innards, fish etc. Well they gotten very creative!!

Well Satay Kajang Hj Samuri is amongst the pioneer in the industry and they've expanded greatly over the years that KLites do not need to drive all the way to Kajang to savour this delicacy. The chicken and beef satay retails at 50 sens a stick. The meats are very well marinated with all sorts of spices as shown in this recipe here.

What I like best about Satay Kajang Hj Samuri is the way the beef satay turned out. It's always tender and moist unlike some places I've been to, they came out like tree bark literally. The chicken satay also hardly contain any fatty skins but yet they are tender.

Served with a not too spicy peanut sauce, we were absolutely in sky high enjoying our satay for dinner last night. Ahhh... till his next craving for satay.........!!!
