**Non-halal review**
We have a girls night out recently. Another one of our mambo jambo outings hehehehe... Miss Sweet 16 picked me and Satine. Then like a mad woman she went swerving left and right in the maddening trafic, ok ok I was exaggerating, she drove relatively slow whilst we were deciding where to have our dinner.
Miss Sweet 16 went rattling off a few places until Satine and I jested why not have one course at each of these places mentioned hahaha... Miss Sweet 16 was very very GAME!
So for our starter and main course, we opted for Meaty House in Damansara Utama. Urggghhh, that horrible area is very hard to get a parking. We went round twice and gotten lucky. Found someone leaving and the lot is just next to Meaty House. How lucky!
We were given the menu and my oh my... so many choices. Since Miss Sweet 16 has been there numerous time, we asked her to order. She picked a Garden Salad, German Pork Knuckle and Mexican Spicy Pork Ribs to be shared amongst us.
There's nothing much to write on the ordinary salad laden with Thousand Island Dressing. The Mexican Spicy Pork Ribs that came next got me excited as it looked soo good underneath the glistening sauce. The meat came off the bones easily and it literally melt in the mouth! So tender and the taste is wonderful even without the sauce. The sauce is not at all spicy but it has got a kick. Accompanying the ribs were some mash potatoes and some salad of err cabbage I think, almost coleslaw like.
When the knuckle came, one look I knew this baby is going to be very very crispy! The skin portion looked so tempting, let alone the inner meat. One poke on the skin *crack* whoa... it's really very crispy. I've ate at Deutches Haus, Deutches Gashaus and EuroDeli but none of them offered such crispy skin. The thought of my widening waist was pushed aside to accommodate this delicious chunk of meat. This came with some brown sauce in a gravy pot, some saurkraut and gee I forgot what else was in this plate cos the meat itself was just too attractive. Didn't like the saurkraut here though. It's too dry for my liking. I'm now thinking of the nice and juicy ones at EuroDeli and Bier Keller. Yum Yum...
After filling ourselves up, Miss Sweet 16 was very eager to take us to the next location for dessert. Myself and Satine were like aiyoyo... still can eat meh?? So we paid our bill which came up to about RM77 that included 3 drinks. Not bad I would say, pretty reasonable.
Meaty House
15 Jalan SS21/56D Damansara Utama, Damansara
Phone: 03-77273327
They have branches in USJ** and the latest Jalan Alor (next to 7-11).
Off we went to our next destination, Chef Loong (in SS2, same row as the Police Station) which offers all kinds of tempting and tasty Shanghai desserts, tong shui (sweet soup) and snacks. Actually Satine and I quite stuffed already so we just ordered the Almond Beancurd With Mixed Fruits, Red Bean Banana with Katafil and err what puree we have with Yam Ice-Cream?? I really forgot la cos it wasn't really impressive. Well either that or I was stuffed already.
Almond Beancurd is not something I fancied as the taste is something that need to be acquired. However, Chef Loong's version is on the mild side. The syrup is not too sweet. I won't mind ordering this again the next time.
Red Bean Banana with Katafil is a sweet snack of banana and red bean paste encased in crispy strings of noodles. Not overly oily but kinda messy when bitten as the noodles dropped everywhere, not a very pleasant sight hehehe...
The next dessert was a cold puree of gosh I really forgot what it was but I remembered it has got yam ice-cream on it. Whatever it is, the puree has got a mild coconut flavour with some sago in them. Nothing impressive.
Next trip, will try the tong shuis and deep fried gwai lin gou (some kind of herbal jelly). Oh yeah, sorry no photos as we've dug in before remembering that we need to take photos of them.
Chef Loong Cuisine

Open from 6pm onwards
On our way back to the car, we saw this huge signage of the corner shop... What a SOD!!! Heh
** Just a side joke on SJ and USJ... SJ is Subang Jaya but to many people it's known as Super Jam since that place was very famous for traffic jam those days. Next to SJ, there is another residential area known as USJ. Not sure what's the original U stands for but it's widely known as Ultra Super Jam hahaha... Traffic is really bad there especially in front of Summit Hotel.
*** Thank you Miss Sweet 16 for recommending such wonderful places and taking those yummilicious photos.
I had a good time and I've certainly enjoyed the company very much. When is our next mambo jambo??

Then hubby faster checked CNN website and saw just this...

Cooling Drinks for Hot Weather IV
Next up is something that my mom made... it's Sea Coconut, White Fungus, Dried Longan and Gingko Tong Shui (sweet soup in Cantonese). Quite a mouth full eh??
It's another great cooling drinks for our body. This is something yin I guess. The sea coconut is fresh which we can get them easily from the wet market or supermarkets here in Malaysia. Peel off the hard brownish outer layer, wash them up, then sliced them across. You'll get something that looked like and oval ring.
Soak the white fungus in water until it soften. Remove the hard bits. Wash them throughly as there can be bits and piece of UFO (Unidentified Floating Objects) hide in between them. This can be omitted though.
Crack the gingko shells and peel of the brown layer. Remove the bitter centre and wash. Quite tedious huh... but the outcome is well rewarded.
Dump all the ingredients in a pot of water. Boil for about an hour or so until the water in the pot has reduced about one quarter. Add in rock sugar to taste and serve it either hot or cold.

Cooling Drinks for Hot Weather III
Hehehe many many postings in one go since someone complained to me last nite "so boring, long time no updates" kekeke
Next installment on cooling drinks... Apple, Fig With Red Dates sweet soup (tong shui in Cantonese).
This one is very simple to prepare but just that need to boil them for a couple of hours. Sliced some apple (preferabily red sweet ones) thinly. You may cube or chop them too but I find that slicing them thinly cuts down the cooking time plus it looked a whole lot nicer. Apples can be substitute with pears too... so far I've only tried those yellow skinned variety (small and large types). Err sorry hor, I can't remember what's their name but they're from China. Will Google for the name later.
In a pot (about 4 litres) of water add the sliced apples (one small one is sufficient), about 7 - 9 dried figs and about the same amount of red dates. Simmer in slow fire till apples turn translucent. By then the water would have evaporated to at least half from the original amount. Add in rock sugar to taste. Once sugar is melted and taste ok, switch off the fire.
This portion serves 2 - 4 and can be serve hot or chilled.

Cooling Drinks for Hot Weather II
Freeze some grapes and pour pineapple juice over them. Voila, a quick and easy cold concoction minus the ice cubes which can dilute the juice.
Pardon the lousy photo quality... lack of lighting and I'm still learning how to capture good photos.
Cooling Drinks for Hot Weather I
Malaysia is experiencing hot weather at the moment especially states in the northern peninsula. We usually do not drink iced cold drinks but the past couple of months, the weather is extremely hot and humid. We have been drenching ourselves with iced lemon tea, Ribena (ooo I love this... now hubby got addicted too hehe) and the various concoctions that I've tried to make to cool us down.
There... I will be running a series of cooling drinks and it will keep on coming along the way.
I've gotten a bunch of fresh mint leaves from the market and been thinking what to do with them. So first up - iced mint tea!!! Nothing beats a nice cold refreshing mint tea. I've used Darjeeling tea leaves this round. Dump in some mint leaves. Pour in hot boiling water and infuse them for a few minutes.
Next pour into a glass and topped up with ice cubes followed by a twig of mint leaves. Hmmmm... so refreshing!

Canned Meat And Dou Miao Fried Bee Hoon
*Non-halal dish*
I've some leftover canned pork ribs in the fridge which hubby didn't managed to finish a couple of days ago, a bag of dou miao (Mandarin for peas shoots) and another bag of carrot. After much thinking, I decided to fry some bee hoon using them. Took the ribs out and removed the oil that has set in the dish... ahhhh a wonderful way to remove excess fats! Minced some garlic, cut carrot into strips, wash the dou miao, soak the bee hoon and voila, can start cooking already.
Add oil into hot wok and put in the garlic. Fry for awhile before add in the dou miao and carrot strips. Stir and coat them evenly with oil. Next dish them up and set aside.
Put in the pork ribs with the gravy and all into the wok. It's not necessary to add in oil as there will be some remnants left in the gravy. Pour in some water (the amount should correspond with the amount of bee hoon you have) and wait for it to boil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Next add in the soaked bee hoon. Cook till its soften. Add in the dou miao and carrots. Stir and mix evenly. Once the gravy is dried up, you can dish up and serve. Best eaten hot!

Tzai Choy Version 2.0
Hehehe it's my occupational hazzard to name the dishes in version format, sorry. I cooked Tzai Choy (vegetarian dish in Cantonese) again recently but with slighty different ingredients from Version 1.0.
Version 2.0 has black fungus, cloud ears fungus, dried lily bud, glass noodles, cabbage, black mushroom, button mushroom and dao gan (a type of layered beancurd skin) instead of gluten or beancurd sheet. I've added another piece of lam yue (Cantonese for red fermented beancurd) for extra flavouring so that I do not need to add salt.
This was how Version 2.0 looked like...

My Occupation
This is something I received in my mailbox which I find it's very inspiring and wickedly funny. Read on...
Just a Mum??
A woman named Emily renewing her driver's license at the Transport office was asked by the clerk to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.
"What I mean is," explained the clerk, "do you have a job, or are you just a ......?
"Of course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a Mum."
"We don't list 'Mum' as an occupation...... 'Housewife' covers it," said the clerk emphatically.
I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our local police station. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar."
"What is your occupation?" she probed. What made me say it, I do not know...
The words simply popped out.
"I'm a."
The clerk paused, pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire!
"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?"
Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing programme of research, (what mother doesn't), in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out).
I'm working for my Masters, (the whole bloody family), and already have four credits, (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree.?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."
There was an increasing note of respect in the girl's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.
When I got home, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 10, 7, and 3. Upstairs, I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development programme, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had triumphed over bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mum."
Motherhood.....What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door.
Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations" , and great grandmothers "Executive Senior Research Associates"??? I think so!!!
I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants".

Formula Red Booster Car Seat
My 2.5 years old had outgrew his Century Convertible Seat. Urrghhh when we purchased that, the sales girl informed us it can easily be used up to 17kg or about 4 years old. My boiboi grew really fast or what, he's only 2.5 years old. I knew his height has gone over the limit of the seat belt. He was 15kg in November or was it October? So last week I took out the weighing scale and weight him, goshhh... his current weight is 17kg!!! Where the heck the 2kgs came from??? No wonder it's so back breaking carrying him these days.
Sighhhh so no choice but to get him the next level car seat. We've been on the look out for a Booster Car Seat the last few months actually. Well, we're very aware of the growth rate of our child and safety to us is the utmost important thang. Just didn't have the "push" to decide and purchase one though. Not until we found out his latest weight! Tsk... tskk... tsskkk... shame on us! Yes, I know!
Checked out a few stores and finally we narrowed down to either a Graco Turbobooster or Maxi-Cosi Rodi XP. Decision... decision... decision... Based on the features on both models, we got the Maxi-Cosi Rodi XP at last, from Planete Enfants over at The Mall or was it now known as Plaza Putra?
I tell you hor, if I'm a kid, I would be darn happy too... if my parents bought me such a cool car seat! Check out how beautiful the colour combination...
He simply loved it! In fact he got so excited when I took it back to clean it, he said "Wahhhh new chair". He kept insisting us to put the new chair in his daddy's car. Hah! He's happy and we're happy too but pocket very empty liau...

Rosli Mi Rebus
My colleague introduced me to this stall at Masjid India area a few months back. Located behind Wisma Shen, there is this row of roadside hawker stalls, look for Rosli Mi Rebus signage.
A pair of elderly couple man the stall. Pakcik (a common Malay word with reference as Uncle) does all the cooking, whilst his wife will add on the condiments and sauce. They sell a really yummy Mi Rebus (roughly translated as blanched noodle in Malay. Mi is commonly spelt as Mee in Malaysia.). There is nothing special in the ingredients as they merely consisted of blanched yellow noodle (similar to chow mien noodle depicted here), mung bean sprouts, cucumber strips, half a boiled egg and limau kasturi (a type of lime). Topped with sliced red and green chilies, Chinese celery and bawang goreng (Malay for deep fried shallots). The kick of this dish lies on the sauce. Makcik (Pakcik's wife whom I shall refer as Makcik for the equivalent of an aunt) will ladle on the yellowish sauce over this. I'm not sure what's inside but mostly local spices, mash potatoes as thickener and so forth. I really love the sauce as I drank
Sorry, I didn't managed to take a photo as my mobile phone got stolen a few weeks back. Reid has taken one on her trip to Singapore recently. They do not look the same but similar though. For RM2.70, it is really a cheap lunch by KL standard.
Besides Mi Rebus, Pakcik dish up a devilish peanut sauce to serve with another specialty - tauhu goreng (deep fried beancurd). Pakcik uses the soft beancurd and when a customer order one, he will just dunk one whole beancurd into a big wok of hot oil. Once it is light golden brown, Pakcik will dish out and Makcik will cut the beancurd up and place it on top of some cucumber and blanched mung bean sprouts. She will then ladle on the potent peanut sauce! I can handle hot and spicy stuff very well but this sauce really pack the punch... HOT!
I packed this back for dinner and here is how tauhu goreng looked like. By the way, it's RM1.20 for a piece. That's 2 pieces there in the photo.
Pakcik can cater to office and private functions. Call him a day in advance. Errr do speak to them in Malay ok hehehe.

It's Back to Blogger's Comment
I'm changing my comments back to Blogger's since they've upgraded to pop-up and even allow non Blogger member to place comment. Plus point is, a mail will be sent to me should someone place a comment here. I'll be keeping HaloScan comments to maintain the old ones.
