Review: Let's Log 'n Roll

UPDATED 21 July 2008

The kiosk has shifted to Ikano Power Centre, opposite A&W or beside Uncle Lim

------------------------------

After our share-share dinner, we bumped into my ex-colleague at one of those kiosks at LG, Midvalley Megamall. I was surprised to see him busy selling his wares there hahaha... but it's a good thing! I was quite happy to see the wares he's peddling... one of my fave food! It's chee cheung fun (rice noodles) that came in pre-packaged form. Just need to steam or microwave them. How convenient!

Apparently all these while his family have been the producer and supplier of chee cheung fun. It is only a few days back they started to retail the pre-packages at a kiosk with the name Log 'n Roll.

Log 'n Roll

There are quite a number of varieties of pre-packaged ones ranging from plain, dried shrimps, oats, emerald (dried shrimps and spring onions) and etc. All of them priced differently. I've got a pack of emerald for RM4.00. Inside has 8 rolls which is really value for money. The stall near my house sells similar stuff for RM1 per roll!

LnR - emerald ccf RM4.00

However, you'll need to buy the sauces separately though which came in tubs. They have sweet sauce (RM1.00), soy sauce, hoisin sauce and crispy prawn chilli (RM3.00). Hubby picked sweet sauce and crispy prawn chilli.

My ex-colleague recommended us to steam them as it will produce a softer roll. So I steamed them up for breakfast yesterday. The rolls practically glistened after steaming. I had mine with some soy sauce (my own one LOL) and crispy prawn chilli which is quiet HOT. The chee cheung fun is smoothhh.

Hubby had his with sweet sauce (sorry huh the pics looked like a mess pile of **** hehehe). It was okay but he said would have been better if there were more dried shrimps.

Overall, the chee cheung fun is smooth, conveniently packed and most importantly, it's reasonabily priced. The only thing now is we can get them from Midvalley Megamall at the moment. Have to give them some time before they start retailing them at more places. I don't remember seeing any halal logo on the pack plus there is no expiry date printed on the pack. Some minor hiccup but I doubt one would keep these for long hehe. Oh yeah, you can also have them done up with various sauces ie. cheese (I find it weird ok), mushroom etc to be eaten on the spot. I bought one pack to pai nien with another chee cheung fun lover. Must be her first to receive that for new year hehe. Will check with her for her verdict later.

Head on to Log 'n Roll kiosk to bring back some chee cheung fun to savour at home.

Valentine's Day Came Early

LOL... sure would have captured your attention eh with that kind of title?? Actually it was just a simple dinner at the new errrmmm Asian food section at The Gardens but I thot the title was kinda appropriate when we practically shared a bowl of noodles, a piece of chicken, and dessert, well except for the drink last night. Seems like another mall crawl to me too hehe.

I got the lead to check out sbread from Jocelyn who dropped me a mail yesterday informing of this place she had tried it in Bangkok serving a unique yam kaya (a type of coconut jam). Her description made my mouth waters that I decided to check it out immediately. When hubby and I reached there, it took a while to locate sbread cos it was located in an obscure corner.

This Asian food section is a combination of shops and stals located along the underpass in between MidValley Megamall and The Gardens at LG level. The decor using Asians old prints as wall paper, bamboos scaffoldings and old windows and doors at the ceilings kinda make it uniquely Asian at this part of the mall. However, the mishmash of the furnitures in the centre part made it looked quirky! The stall (forgot the name) selling porridge and crullers (yau char kwai) have Chinese antique looking stools where the wooden part painted in bright yellow! Direct across sbread have bright yellow metal tables that fit in an outdoor garden more! There are a few more outlets which I didn't take a closer look but seriously the whole thing just doesn't jive. I wonder if these different looking tables and chairs were supplied by the individual shops/stalls and if we can cross order??

Now onto the food, after checking sbread's menu, there is nothing suitable for a proper dinner, so we decided to share a bowl of Shihlin Taiwanese Street Snack's Handmade Oyster Mee Sua (RM5.50) and a piece of XXL Crispy Chicken (RM5.50). I wonder how they maintain the mee sua without turning soggy and the gravy become starchy when kept in the hot pot? These are nice to eat but always ended up drinking loads of water later on, must have MSG inside, no?

We crossed over to sbread and check out it's menu board. One can have various topping for 3 types of bread, namely White, Sesame or Charcoal, yeah you read me right, it's charcoal made from bamboo! I've seen some Taiwanese and Japanese programmes using them in soups but never in bread form. Toppings vary from 3 types of kaya - vanilla which is in orangey hue, pandan and yam (taro); milo and condensed milk (a childhood favourite); butter and sugar; chocolate; peanut butter; or jam. There is a savoury one too of chilli paste with shredded floss.

Check out the samples at the counter, (L-R) pandan kaya, vanilla kaya, yam kaya, peanut butter, butter and sugar, and chilli spread with floss.

We opted for pandan kaya with sesame toast (RM3.60) and yam kaya with charcoal toast (RM3.90). Errr the breads came covered drenched but I likey! The pandan kaya reminded me of the yummy dip that came with the mini crullers at Nong and Jimmy. Fragrant and went well with the sesame bread. As for the yam kaya, I literally licked the paper platter clean, err more like with the wooden pick. It's very thick with lots of yam pieces in there, just think of a very very thick bubur cha cha!!! My hubby offered to hold the platter should I decided to lick it with my tongue :p Since the charcoal bread was drenched with the yam kaya, I can't distinctively taste out the bread.

We both shared everything except for the iced Thai tea (RM3.40) which doesn't taste like normal iced tea. This one have a very distinct taste... smokey... almost like lotus tea in Vietnamese restaurant. Could be an acquired taste to some but I like it.

By the end of our dinner, we were so stuffed... luckily we shared everything otherwise it would have been a hard time to finish up. Don't you agree with me, it was indeed sounded like Valentine's Dinner? Hahaha...

Vegetarian Dishes for First Day of Lunar New Year

As I've mentioned earlier in my blog (wow 4 years ago haha...), we will usually have vegetarian meal for the day, so this year, it's no different except that instead of making the usual tzai choy (vegetarian) dish, I've made additional dishes.

So I have Tzai Choy (Vegetarian Dish) Version 4.0. Version 3.0 post have more details about this dish.

Tzai Choy (Vegetarian Dish) Version 4.0b

I have some celery stir fried with capsicums in traffic light colours and carrots. Just fried them all in some oil then sprinkle on some water before adding a wee bit of vegetarian oyster sauce. Sighhhh it's so different from stir frying them in some chopped garlic... this is sooooo plain, soooooo NOT tasty at all!!!

Stir-fried Celery Vegetarian Style

Next, I have my boiboi's favourite sweet and sour veaty bites of the "chicken" pieces cooked in tomato puree with some carrots and capsicums. He loves this so much that he asked for this dish 3 days in a row!!!! It's very abnormal of him to ask for repeats cos he has inherited the mummy's "memory problem" of not able to eat the same stuff for 2 days in a row, well except for bread in my case. More on Veaty Bites here and here.

Sweet and Sour Veaty Bites

So that was my plain first day of lunar new year. How was yours? I'm sure more exciting than mine haha... anyway wishing you guys more merry feasting till Chap Goh Mei.

Review: Fock Kee Seafood Restaurant

**Non-Halal**

As I've updated in my post about Fook Kee, they have now shifted across the road, within Queen's Park complex. Even their name spelt differently now haha but rest assured, they're the same people. The reason they shifted was the old place which is actually a shack tend to flood during heavy rain. It's more comfortable now at the new place.

This round instead of having rice and dishes, we opted for noodles. I picked Kong Nam meen since we've never tasted their version and this was how it looked like - deep fried sang meen (fresh noodles) overflowing with not too starchy eggy gravy topped with generous serving of prawns, squid, pork meat, baby corn, cauliflower, mushrooms, snow peas and carrots. No doubt, this version is pretty good but I still stand by Greenview's.

FK - kong nam meen

Hubby asked for a plate of Kum Hiong Lala which is spicy stir-fried clams with crunchy deep fried dried shrimps and fragrant curry leaves. The clams are quite substantial in size and there are actually clam meat in there as oppose to some places where they have more shells than meat! It's tasty to suck and lick the sauce that coated the shells on top of crunching the dried shrimps.

FK - kum hiong lala

Comfortable and spacious, reasonabily priced food and parking is easier now within the complex which costed RM1 only. What more to ask for?

Nigella's American Breakfast Pancakes

I've made this pancake for my boiboi's breakie during my detox period. I decided to try this recipe from Nigella Lawson's How To Be A Domestic Goddess cos it looked super easy. Just blitz all ingredients in a blender!!! She mentioned that this recipe will yield thick and spongy pancakes BUT it's totally different when I made mine... sigh... could it be the ingredients again? Most likely huh since I've used low-fat milk instead of full cream milk. The pancake is thin and its not exactly fluffy. Tastewise, it's actually quite all right. I've used Jamie Oliver's recipe (ehhh I realised I didn't blog about it, lemme find the pic first) before this which turned out perfectly, errr just that it's a wee bit troublesome of beating egg whites separately before folding into the batter proper. I guess one could never be lazy to churn out good stuff eh???

Pancakes, Nigella's recipe

American Breakfast Pancake

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
pinch of salt
1 tsp sugar
2 large eggs, beaten
2 tbsp butter, melted and cooled
1 1/3 cups milk
butter for frying

Blitz all ingredients in a blender or mix batter by hand in a bowl, make a well in the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar; beat in the eggs, melted butter and milk. Transfer to a pitcher which is easier to pour the batter into the pan. Leave for 20 mins before using.

Cook till the upper side of the pancake is blistering and bubbling before flipping over to cook the second side and this needs only about 1 minute.
