Tzai Choy Version 2.0

Hehehe it's my occupational hazzard to name the dishes in version format, sorry. I cooked Tzai Choy (vegetarian dish in Cantonese) again recently but with slighty different ingredients from Version 1.0.

Version 2.0 has black fungus, cloud ears fungus, dried lily bud, glass noodles, cabbage, black mushroom, button mushroom and dao gan (a type of layered beancurd skin) instead of gluten or beancurd sheet. I've added another piece of lam yue (Cantonese for red fermented beancurd) for extra flavouring so that I do not need to add salt.

This was how Version 2.0 looked like...

My Occupation

This is something I received in my mailbox which I find it's very inspiring and wickedly funny. Read on...

Just a Mum??

A woman named Emily renewing her driver's license at the Transport office was asked by the clerk to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

"What I mean is," explained the clerk, "do you have a job, or are you just a ......?

"Of course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a Mum."

"We don't list 'Mum' as an occupation...... 'Housewife' covers it," said the clerk emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our local police station. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar."

"What is your occupation?" she probed. What made me say it, I do not know...
The words simply popped out.

"I'm a."

The clerk paused, pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire!

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?"

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing programme of research, (what mother doesn't), in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out).

I'm working for my Masters, (the whole bloody family), and already have four credits, (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree.?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."

There was an increasing note of respect in the girl's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.

When I got home, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 10, 7, and 3. Upstairs, I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development programme, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had triumphed over bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mum."

Motherhood.....What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door.

Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations" , and great grandmothers "Executive Senior Research Associates"??? I think so!!!

I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants".

Formula Red Booster Car Seat

My 2.5 years old had outgrew his Century Convertible Seat. Urrghhh when we purchased that, the sales girl informed us it can easily be used up to 17kg or about 4 years old. My boiboi grew really fast or what, he's only 2.5 years old. I knew his height has gone over the limit of the seat belt. He was 15kg in November or was it October? So last week I took out the weighing scale and weight him, goshhh... his current weight is 17kg!!! Where the heck the 2kgs came from??? No wonder it's so back breaking carrying him these days.

Sighhhh so no choice but to get him the next level car seat. We've been on the look out for a Booster Car Seat the last few months actually. Well, we're very aware of the growth rate of our child and safety to us is the utmost important thang. Just didn't have the "push" to decide and purchase one though. Not until we found out his latest weight! Tsk... tskk... tsskkk... shame on us! Yes, I know!

Checked out a few stores and finally we narrowed down to either a Graco Turbobooster or Maxi-Cosi Rodi XP. Decision... decision... decision... Based on the features on both models, we got the Maxi-Cosi Rodi XP at last, from Planete Enfants over at The Mall or was it now known as Plaza Putra?

I tell you hor, if I'm a kid, I would be darn happy too... if my parents bought me such a cool car seat! Check out how beautiful the colour combination...

He simply loved it! In fact he got so excited when I took it back to clean it, he said "Wahhhh new chair". He kept insisting us to put the new chair in his daddy's car. Hah! He's happy and we're happy too but pocket very empty liau...

Rosli Mi Rebus

My colleague introduced me to this stall at Masjid India area a few months back. Located behind Wisma Shen, there is this row of roadside hawker stalls, look for Rosli Mi Rebus signage.

A pair of elderly couple man the stall. Pakcik (a common Malay word with reference as Uncle) does all the cooking, whilst his wife will add on the condiments and sauce. They sell a really yummy Mi Rebus (roughly translated as blanched noodle in Malay. Mi is commonly spelt as Mee in Malaysia.). There is nothing special in the ingredients as they merely consisted of blanched yellow noodle (similar to chow mien noodle depicted here), mung bean sprouts, cucumber strips, half a boiled egg and limau kasturi (a type of lime). Topped with sliced red and green chilies, Chinese celery and bawang goreng (Malay for deep fried shallots). The kick of this dish lies on the sauce. Makcik (Pakcik's wife whom I shall refer as Makcik for the equivalent of an aunt) will ladle on the yellowish sauce over this. I'm not sure what's inside but mostly local spices, mash potatoes as thickener and so forth. I really love the sauce as I drank

Sorry, I didn't managed to take a photo as my mobile phone got stolen a few weeks back. Reid has taken one on her trip to Singapore recently. They do not look the same but similar though. For RM2.70, it is really a cheap lunch by KL standard.

Besides Mi Rebus, Pakcik dish up a devilish peanut sauce to serve with another specialty - tauhu goreng (deep fried beancurd). Pakcik uses the soft beancurd and when a customer order one, he will just dunk one whole beancurd into a big wok of hot oil. Once it is light golden brown, Pakcik will dish out and Makcik will cut the beancurd up and place it on top of some cucumber and blanched mung bean sprouts. She will then ladle on the potent peanut sauce! I can handle hot and spicy stuff very well but this sauce really pack the punch... HOT!

I packed this back for dinner and here is how tauhu goreng looked like. By the way, it's RM1.20 for a piece. That's 2 pieces there in the photo.

Pakcik can cater to office and private functions. Call him a day in advance. Errr do speak to them in Malay ok hehehe.

Fried Rice With Chinese Sausage

Looks yummy or not? Hehehe I guess must be the colour of this photo or was it because I've used extra virgin olive oil instead?

Fried rice is one of the simplest one meal dish to muster up. All one needed is some over night cooked rice and whatever other ingredients you could find in your fridge ranging from eggs, sausages, Chinese sausages, French or long beans, mixed vegetables, meat, onions, sardines, green peas... well the list is endless.

This time I've Chinese sausages, French beans and eggs on hand. First I scrambled the eggs in some oil and set aside. Next, I stir fry the skinned and thinly sliced sausages in olive oil. Dunk in the diced French beans and stir. Add in some salt and pepper. Rice is added next and give them a good stir. Scooped up some rice and tasted it. Added more salt. Sometimes I do not use any salt at all and in place, I use light soya sauce, other times oyster sauce is added in. Dump in the scrambled eggs and stir till well mixed. Dish out and pig out!!!

Yuanxiao Festival, also known as Lantern Festival

Falling on the 15th day of the first month of the Lunar Year, Yuanxiao (in Mandarin, Yuan literarily means "First" while Xiao refers to "night") Festival, more popular known as Chap Goh Mei (in Hokkien) in Malaysia. It is part of and the last day of the Chinese New Year and marks the end of the New Year celebrations.

It is traditionally a time for family reunion. The most prominent activity of the Yuanxiao Festival is the display of all types of beautiful lanterns. So the occasion is also called the Lantern Festival.

Yuanxiao Festival is also popularly referred to as Chinese Valentine’s Day. In the past, it was the only day of the year that a single woman could go out (chaperoned) and be seen by eligible bachelors. Now, many single people gather at the festival, and some play matchmaking games with the lanterns. Young ladies would converge to throw mandarin oranges into the sea wishing to get a good life partner.

Everything will be back to normal tomorrow especially those Chinese owned businesses where all staff will be back at work on full force. Sighhh this means the traffic in KL is going to be all time high again!!!

Wishing everyone a good year ahead and happy celebrating Chap Goh Mei!
