Valentine's Day Came Early

LOL... sure would have captured your attention eh with that kind of title?? Actually it was just a simple dinner at the new errrmmm Asian food section at The Gardens but I thot the title was kinda appropriate when we practically shared a bowl of noodles, a piece of chicken, and dessert, well except for the drink last night. Seems like another mall crawl to me too hehe.

I got the lead to check out sbread from Jocelyn who dropped me a mail yesterday informing of this place she had tried it in Bangkok serving a unique yam kaya (a type of coconut jam). Her description made my mouth waters that I decided to check it out immediately. When hubby and I reached there, it took a while to locate sbread cos it was located in an obscure corner.

This Asian food section is a combination of shops and stals located along the underpass in between MidValley Megamall and The Gardens at LG level. The decor using Asians old prints as wall paper, bamboos scaffoldings and old windows and doors at the ceilings kinda make it uniquely Asian at this part of the mall. However, the mishmash of the furnitures in the centre part made it looked quirky! The stall (forgot the name) selling porridge and crullers (yau char kwai) have Chinese antique looking stools where the wooden part painted in bright yellow! Direct across sbread have bright yellow metal tables that fit in an outdoor garden more! There are a few more outlets which I didn't take a closer look but seriously the whole thing just doesn't jive. I wonder if these different looking tables and chairs were supplied by the individual shops/stalls and if we can cross order??

Now onto the food, after checking sbread's menu, there is nothing suitable for a proper dinner, so we decided to share a bowl of Shihlin Taiwanese Street Snack's Handmade Oyster Mee Sua (RM5.50) and a piece of XXL Crispy Chicken (RM5.50). I wonder how they maintain the mee sua without turning soggy and the gravy become starchy when kept in the hot pot? These are nice to eat but always ended up drinking loads of water later on, must have MSG inside, no?

We crossed over to sbread and check out it's menu board. One can have various topping for 3 types of bread, namely White, Sesame or Charcoal, yeah you read me right, it's charcoal made from bamboo! I've seen some Taiwanese and Japanese programmes using them in soups but never in bread form. Toppings vary from 3 types of kaya - vanilla which is in orangey hue, pandan and yam (taro); milo and condensed milk (a childhood favourite); butter and sugar; chocolate; peanut butter; or jam. There is a savoury one too of chilli paste with shredded floss.

We opted for pandan kaya with sesame toast (RM3.60) and yam kaya with charcoal toast (RM3.90). Errr the breads came covered drenched but I likey! The pandan kaya reminded me of the yummy dip that came with the mini crullers at Nong and Jimmy. Fragrant and went well with the sesame bread. As for the yam kaya, I literally licked the paper platter clean, err more like with the wooden pick. It's very thick with lots of yam pieces in there, just think of a very very thick bubur cha cha!!! My hubby offered to hold the platter should I decided to lick it with my tongue :p Since the charcoal bread was drenched with the yam kaya, I can't distinctively taste out the bread.

We both shared everything except for the iced Thai tea (RM3.40) which doesn't taste like normal iced tea. This one have a very distinct taste... smokey... almost like lotus tea in Vietnamese restaurant. Could be an acquired taste to some but I like it.

By the end of our dinner, we were so stuffed... luckily we shared everything otherwise it would have been a hard time to finish up. Don't you agree with me, it was indeed sounded like Valentine's Dinner? Hahaha...

  2. Sharing is always a good idea to makan more varieties eh...Haha..Anyway, very interesting choice in food. I'm crazy over mi suah..so I'm definitely eyeing the one you've highlighted. Looks very yummy! :p

  7. i've tried shihlin's XXL Crispy Chicken...though crunchy, it was basically tasteless unless dusted with the spicy chilli powder...msg abundant, that's for sure...haha...
